Poor writing, bad grammar and pet peeves in general

Post by chumley »

Should I even bother mentioning they're, their, and there?

It's vs its?

Your, you're?

How about "for all intensive purposes"?

Somebody on here has mentioned "lightening" before

Which ones get under your skin?

I have heard that and have read in AZ history books that the old cowboys called it the Cherry Cows!

Funny thing is, I moved to "Preskitt" from Massachusetts....and fell right in step because that's how we'd pronounce it back in New England. And don't get me going on "pahking my cah in the yahd" either. Of course I do that!

Now for the Texans on board...it's called Mass-a-CHOO-setts, and not Mass-a-TOO-shetts. Even though we called it "Messy Two Sh*ts" :sl:

Ha ha ha peaked your interest!

I do believe that the most misspelled word in common usage today is "definitely." I see it spelled "definately," "defiantly" and "definetely."

The way to remember how to spell it is to take it apart. Think of a funny saying, such as, "Dis is de finite moment," or something like that.

@maxpower

When I moved from MA to England at age eight (Dad was in the military...), I spent 3+ months in speech therapy ! Just so I wouldn't be "pahking my cah in the yahd" ever again...

When we finally settled in CA (Mom decided she wanted to retire here to be with her family...), I refused to "warsh my car..." I mean, really... where the heck does that come from !?

I believe that is usually from growing up in Ohio, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

My work place once had a customer from "Annapanance" and it took me a devilishly long time to realize he came from Independence, MO.

And while on the topic of gangsta... pet peeve: those dudes with their pants down around their knees. Seriously, guys?

As far as spelling/syntax/all that wonderful stuff, I seem to be fighting the losing battle in regard (reguard!) to 'nauseated'/'nauseous', 'myriad'/'myriad of' and 'enormity'/'enormous.' I'm also irritated at then/than, but have come to expect that I'm just going to see it. Except when I see 'than' used in place of 'then,' e.g., "I'm going to put on my shoes and than hike." That really grinds my gears. And yes, there is a difference between 'i.e.' and 'e.g.'

I love these ones especially. And why do people shun alittle but keep alot? As for medical terminology, I can't find anyone anywhere who agrees with anyone else on how to pronounce anything.

However, from a linguistic standpoint, a few of these points are moot (mute!) as with long enough exposure to grammatical mistakes they become ingrained in the vernacular. Once it is correct in the vernacular, it is then grammatically correct for those who use that particular dialect. An example is the phrase, "ain't got no," which in some parts of the US is perfectly acceptable. More regionally, the misuse of 'nauseous' (originally 'causing nausea') has effected a change in the definition to also include 'to become nauseated.' So I guess I can live with these little language quirks, since it is truly impossible to keep language from evolving. Not even the French have been able to accomplish that! ;)

No, what bugs me more than any of the above is txt, l33t, or CAPS speech. Really, is it that hard just to type something out normally, using all the letters in a word (I don't even care if you confuse a couple, so long as you give it a try!), with the caps lock off? ThIs Is AlWaYs FuN tO rEaD tOo!

But I digress. The internet is just full of so many interesting colors of language. ;)

PS: I really love it when someone leaves out a hyphen. So if someone types out "big pumpkin ham" I insert my own hyphen mentally so it reads, "big pumpkin-ham." Gives me a little giggle every time. Bruce had one recently about a "man eating shark." Hyphens make a world of difference. :)

Slizzard is a gangsta word? It used to be one of my nicknames, way back in the 70's! I will have to google it to see what it means.
