Poor writing, bad grammar and pet peeves in general

Post by chumley »

Should I even bother mentioning they're, their, and there?

It's vs its?

Your, you're?

How about "for all intensive purposes"?

Somebody on here has mentioned "lightening" before

Which ones get under your skin?

Mr. Gary's favorite word is "flustrated"... I supposed flustered and frustrated. But he uses it all the time, like it's not just a made-up word. Makes me slightly insane, especially when he's flustrated at me.

What's truly sad about this kind of thing is that people turn appeals for discipline they received into HR that read like the above and expect to get taken seriously and cry foul when they are not. What becomes of us as a society when this is considered the norm?! :?

Friend of mine from back east puts an "R" on every word that ends in "a", and changes the "r" on the end of a word to "AH": "I drove the cah this morning to pick up Linder." (Linda) Even on multiples - Linda Vista Drive becomes Linder Vister.

What's funny is it's not the pronunciation, it's the spelling. He told me he was "going to Rar Sushi to eat some raw fish" and he pronounced 'raw' correctly.

Hey its not that late in the year, that sign isn't from an end of October march, that's from a march later in the year. Look at those leafless trees.

Another one I love that makes me giggle every time (despite funny mental images that appear): "bare with me"... haha, I'd rather not, thanks. ;) Though, I guess that's alright in the nude hiker forum!

If you don't win, you lose. Only really slutty losers are loose. Though I understand that "los" and "loos" are pronounced exactly the same and how it can be confusing. You'd think that lose should rhyme with hose and be pronounced more like "Lowes".

And while lightning can be enlightening for some, it is never lightening.

It's and its. Even the best writers sometimes make an error with this one. It's helpful to remember that "it's" with the apostrophe is a contraction and always means "it is" and is never the possessive pronoun. You can easily test it. "The cat licks its fur," or "the cat licks it's fur"? Well, you would not say, "the cat licks it is fur." So you have your answer. It's licking its fur.

"Lightening his load, the backpacker dropped his pack in order to run downhill from the ridge where lightning had struck."

Not sure why it's important. I am terrible with numbers. So, I suppose I like being good at something...

The possessive apostrophe is way overused. I see it on Facebook all the time. On Mother's Day, I saw endless posts like: "I hope all our mom's have a great day!" ... All our mom's what? ](*,)

Oh, yes, that, too. I even see it on business signs, etc. It's funny how someone will type a sentence full of plurals, and somehow decide it's "cute" to use apostrophes on some of the plurals but not others.

For years there was a business in Eagar which did tile work and "refaceing" cabinets. Big sign out front which said they did "refaceing." I used to think it would be amusing to climb up there at 3 a.m. with a can of paint, and remove the "e."

In Springerville they can't decide how to spell the name of one of the Native American tribes their streets are named for. At one end the sign correctly spells "Hualapai," while at the other end of the block it says "Haulapai." They even pronounce it "halla pie" at that end of the street.
