What is your favorite supplement?

What is your favorite supplement?

I read somewhere that there are vitamins and then there are supplements. Where the body can produce vitamins but other things must be consumed... of course you can supplement a vitamin if you're taking a pill or capsule too

Let me state upfront my intentions are not to put anyone down or wave any superiority wands. My opinions are simply opinions and if anyone had the perfect cure-all for whatever we'd all be on it in a heartbeat. Whatever works for you works so go with it. I'll speculate that it's mind over matter in many cases yet "so what" if you are getting results you seek.

Regardless of what some will or will not post supplements are possibly used by a quarter to half the adult population. Every grocery store has a wide selection, then you have drug stores. Imagine putting all those products from all those stores in the valley alone into one pile. This is kiddie stuff folks, hold onto your skivvies if you happen to walk into something like The Vitamin Store.

My experience...
Back in the mid 90's I took androstenedione and creatine. This was in my mountain biking stint and died off as I started hiking. Didn't take anything other than an occasional vitamin and caffeine in massive amounts of Diet Coke. Gave that up three years ago because it was ruling my world. Well that and the stern recommendation from my gf at that time. Seriously though I actually needed caffeine to sleep :o

Although I gave up caffeine I latched on to the B vitamins. Found that with a heavy dose of B12 and a smaller dose of the other Bs I had instant energy. Couple that with ibuprofen (vitamin I as Wally calls it) and the next hour was pure bliss. Did this for a couple years before 5 Hour Energy became so popular. The five cent a piece B vitamins give me the same results at the $2.50 energy drinks. Though I probably get a bigger boost since there isn't caffeine in the pills. Not completely sure if this is damaging my body but I still hit the Bs often.

Last summer I was looking to improve my circulatory so that my lungs don't have to work so hard. Not sure if that possible but I gave it a try. Apparently garlic, ginger, ginkgo biloba and cayenne are the ticket. Took 'em religiously in Aug/Sept. Had my best results in this time period though it could simply be because I thrive in heat. I am sold on cayenne. It took my body a couple weeks to "allow" it...lol
Cayenne has a remarkable property of not only increasing circulatory but remarkable controlling it. This is one of the few instant and noticeable supplements. I don't use it regularly but it seems to kind of work and I'm not finding any reason to be concerned with using it.

Read up on astaxanthin a month ago. Basically like other anti-oxidants in the most microscopic of terms it's suppose to prevent free radicals (cellular damage - the common pathway for cancer, aging, and a variety of diseases). Anyhow I was more interested in it's anti inflammatory results to keep going without swelling up. Did it work... heck I don't know. I changed my diet and consumed more chicken than I normally do in a year, it was cold and and and... basically I was miserable

So my conclusion is who knows, I'm probably just as good eating right and working out regularly than anything else... anyone else?

Does meth and a Power Balance wristlet count?

I just take a multi vite, drink as much fresh oj, grapefruit juice and Pom and of course fresh veggies. Also I used to be plagued with sinus crap during our fall and spring, so a few years ago I focused on local honey. Haven't been sick in years.

@ Al_Hikes

Hmm, for hiking I used to do EmergenCs but these days it's mostly Gu's/Power Gels and maybe a Powerade during or after the hike for recovery and loads of Vitamin D from the sun. :GB:

Vitamin C in the form of EmergenC packets and B vitamins for me. I do also enjoy my daily intake of caffeine in the form of good coffee :D

Lots of Rest Ice Compression and elevation. OK - to get as old as me (Joe won't even post my age anymore on my profile now that I'm this old. :o), you've got to know what you are doing and have some luck. In all seriousness, they have me on Vitamin D. Ultra Preventative III Capsules from Douglas Laboratories (look at multivitamin contents and ABSORPTION!!) (some multivitamins just flush right through your gut and are a waste of money!!) I will take some Vitamin I (Ibuprofen) prophylactically and occasionally some Alleve (Naproxen) prophylactically. I am grateful that I don't need all of those old folks' drugs, cholesterol drugs, ED drugs :y: , etc at my age. I think I owe it all to hiking (or luck). I take some Senna and use some prescription Hydrocortisone cream on my Hemorrhoids :scared: (TMI? just wait til you're my age). I get my Resveratrol from Red Wine. If I die tomorrow, you will know not to follow my advice. Oh yeah and some Mucinex and Claritin D (seasonal Allergies) and some Benedryl (seasonal allergies) and lots of Herradura Tequila (seasonal anxiety). Now that we have medicinal Marijuana, I thought about it but my Doc won't prescribe for me until I have a condition that requires it. I asked. :sl: He doesn't want it to affect my performance (yeah - that kind of performance :) ) which might force me to need ED drugs.
Sometimes I regret that I have been a lover and not a warrior in this life -- but I get over it quickly,

ALIVE whole food energizer and fish oil. During the flu season I add zinc and vitamin C (not interested in putting anti-freeze in my body by way of a flu shot). As a replacemnt for Ibuprofen I use Quercetin.

I tend to be very skeptical anytime I hear a recommendation for supplements but one thing that's been on my radar is glucosamine supplements. If anyone has issues with knees or other joints, I've heard from 2 fairly reliable sources that they started taking a glucosamine supplement each day and noticed significant differences. May be worth checking out...

I think it works. I use the glucosamine with chondroitin and MSM.

can either of you that commented provide some more info on glucosamine. What was going on before that prompted you to take it? (sore knees, stiff back, etc..) Thanks again

Just like any other supplement, do your research on it. If you have diabetes or a family history of diabetes, stay away from glucosamine unless you talk to a doctor who's actually up to date on the recent studies.

Gotta go with ElectroMix (made by the same folks as EmergencyC) at the end of a long hiking day. Lots of potassium to help with those muscle cramp issues.
Other than that, just a multivitamin, with iron or calcium alternating.

I had thought about the glucosamine at some point, but got some muscle-building tips that completely took care of the pain in my knee. :y:
