Mt Peeley: Latest observations + resources

Post by CannondaleKid »

Ok... I'm the one who thought this would be a great idea, so I guess it's time to put up or shut up.

As the weather merges into winter-like conditions in the search area up-to-date information is critical to creating the best-prepared, safest and most efficient search plans in the ongoing search for GPS Joe. With that in mind, we seek as current information as possible and as frequently as possible, so if an opportunity arises with little notice we can better prepare.

Please: If you visit/hike in the Mt Peeley area, take a few moments to observe the conditions listed below and report your findings in this thread when you return home.
Temperature: Estimated low and high temperatures experienced and at what times
Precipitation: Rain, snow, estimated amount, accumulation
Trail condition: Is there any snow or ice on the trail
Off-trail conditions: Is the vegetation dry, wet, covered with snow, etc.? (No need to actually GO off trail)
Road condition: Was the road to the TH dry, wet, muddy, snowy, icy?

Note: Some information is better than none so if you are driving by on AZ 87, take a glance over at Mt Peeley, take note of what you see and report what you can.

RESOURCES:
Also, please use this thread to provide information as to when and how you might be able to assist in upcoming searches.
Days/dates you may be available to assist (we know there will be fluidity)
Your general physical condition/stamina/etc. (Rate on scale, 5 as top condition, 1 as "I'll monitor the radios from the trail")
Search area preferences (light vegetation, thick vegetation, areas with exposure, etc.)
Special skills: Rappelling, etc.

With that information close-at-hand, when an opportunity arises where a number of searchers are available and the weather & road conditions cooperate, we can have a coordinated effort.

Thank you! Your efforts are appreciated!

I tried to get up the Mt. Peeley road today but encountered too much snow for my Subaru Impreza
by the time I was 6 miles up. I was prepared to walk the final 3 miles to the trailhead but managed
to turn around before I got truly stuck. I'll try again in a week and hope this warmer weather will
diminish the snow on those north-facing stretches.

I made it to Mt. Peely TH yesterday! Road was easily passable for all but the last 3 miles. Last 3 miles have lengthy ~4” deep snow and ice patches, 4x4 necessary. The rain/snow we had last night may have totally changed road conditions since my visit.

I was watching radar today and it looked like a couple of pretty good squalls of snow passed over the area. Level was down in the 4000s too.
I'm not sure what my spirit animal is, but I'm confident it has rabies.
