Need a hike location

I would like to start hiking...I'm not too inteseted in driving too far or having to pay a fee to park. What can you reccomend near Avondale?

About the closest free, real hiking is the Laveen access to South Mountain about a 40min drive

Estrella Regional Mountain Park has a number of very mild trails, of varying lengths, that you can get acclimated on. (See Joe's link, above, or http://www.maricopa.gov/parks/estrella/ )
