Garmin/Mapsource question
Whenever I download a route from the site and upload it my GPS through Mapsource, I'm left with only a fraction of the track. IE: A 15 mile route will be reduced to 4 miles. Has anyone had this issue before? Any suggestions for a fix?

I had to look that one up. Pyrric victory, that is.

Re: Garmin/Mapsource question
I did the "active log" approach again, but now I have a 40 mile line headed from home to the start of the hike. Last time I was able to edit this by hovering the cursor over the track, but now I'm not getting that option. Anyone know how to do it?

@Patrick L
Are you using Route Manager to handle the track editing or another application? I can offer some help if you use Mapsource or Basecamp...

Re: Garmin/Mapsource question
I downloaded the route from the site for a hike tomorrow. It shows up on my GPS just fine, but there's a huge line going from where I am now to the beginning of the track because it's titled "Active log," and is apparently still active. I was just wondering if there was a way to get rid of the annoying line. I've done it before, but I don't remember how.

Re: Garmin/Mapsource question
I have had the same issue, and as I recall, I eliminated it by editing out the first or last data point, the one with missing information. The line is usually between where you turned on the unit to the first point in the active log. You have to eliminate the data point where you last turned it on, usually my kitchen table. Hope that is correct.

I believe you are on the right track (no pun intended).Sredfield wrote:I have had the same issue, and as I recall, I eliminated it by editing out the first or last data point, the one with missing information. First, ACTIVE LOG is simply the default name of a track created by the unit while it's on. (ACTIVE LOG 001 will be the next default, followed by ACTIVE LOG 002, etc.)
From personal experience uploading a track to Route Manager I ended up with the same line across it which was due to a waypoint at the other end of the hike from the end point of the uploaded track. Once I figured that out I make sure I don't upload any track with an extraneous waypoint.
So as you mentioned, whether removing the first or last point of the track or a random waypoint that does the trick, that's probably all it will take.

Re: Garmin/Mapsource question
I experienced that as well. When you start your hike make sure you use "Clear current track" on the GPS, otherwise if you turned it on at home it will use that as the first waypoint and draw a straight line to where you turned it on out in the field.

Re: Garmin/Mapsource question
When my GPS is recording a track, the map shows a straight line from where I started to my current location instead my actual track/progress. I assume there's an option somewhere that must have toggled at some point, but I can't find anything. Has anyone had this issue before?

Re: Garmin/Mapsource question
I'm no expert, but... mine (Garmin 450) does that if I turn it off between start/finish. In fact, if I "Clear Track" at home in Mesa, turn it off, then drive to the Barhardt TH, I have to "Clear Track" again after I turn the unit on or it will include the "as the crow flys" 45 mile straight line from my house to the TH. When I leave it turned on it tracks correctly. I assume that's the way it's supposed to work?

Re: Garmin/Mapsource question
I have to clear track on mine about 6 times at the trailhead, or it will say I hiked 143.2 miles in 4 hours. Drives me nuts.

Re: Garmin/Mapsource question
If I recall correctly you have a Garmin 60CSx? Re..The Straight Line: If a 60CSx, you probably inadvertently enabled the "Go To" function to go to a possible waypoint location you have in your GPS. To cancel this, go to the Map Screen and press Menu button, then toggle down to the highlighted option "Stop Navigation" and then press enter and that should cancel your straight line. Re..your actual track/progress: In your "Track Log Screen" as long as you turn on the track at the beginning of your hike, it should show on the Map Screen and track your actual progress.Patrick L wrote:When my GPS is recording a track, the map shows a straight line from where I started to my current location instead my actual track/progress. Hank nailed it, get to the setup menu and stop navigation.

Re: Garmin/Mapsource question
It's an etrex (I think that's what they're called - I don't pay attention anymore). I'll take a look at it again next time I'm out. I messed with the navigation before and remember having the straight line even after it was off, which is why I thought I may have changed some other setting somewhere.

Re: Garmin/Mapsource question
I have an etrex that does that once in a while. Can't see anything with that frickin line in the way. Like nonot says, find "stop navigation". That will kill it.

Same thing for me. I think it is when tracking is off (on the trip menu at the top of the screen  ).

I tried to use my GPS yesterday while on a very short hike and it is ALL messed up. Teva Joe, be prepared for a lot of confused questions from me in a few days!

Re: Garmin/Mapsource question
I messed with my GPS the other day and I can confirm that it was not in navigation mode. I had a track that started just outside of Linwood, KS and ended in my living room (current location when I turned on the unit). It wouldn't go away after clearing the track log, or even after starting and stopping navigation mode. I emailed Garmin and specifically stated it was not in navigation mode, to which they responded with instructions on how to exit navigation mode. However, they also gave instructions on how to reset the unit so I gave that a go. The glitch is gone and the GPS is back in working order.
