North Peak Trail, AZ :: Pole Hollow Canyon Loop

Post by DBmooner »

I was thinking of doing a loop hike starting on the North peak trail to Mazatzal divide TH and then take Pole Hollow back to the North peak TH. My map shows Pole Hollow as a non maintained trail. I was wondering if it is still there or has it gotten over grown since the fire and if it isn't lost to history can it be followed or is it a bushwhack from hell and not worth the trouble?

There is actually a trail named "Pole Hollow" which connects with the Mazatzel Divide Tr 23 and heads back to the area of the Mineral Creek TH?
I hope it's really there and doable as you may not enjoy doing an "out and back" on the entire North Peak Tr 24 ;)

Yeah, what Hank said. I've never even seen a map that shows a Pole Hollow Trail, or heard of it. I've seen maps with the Sandy Saddle Trail off of Barnhardt, and a few other imaginary trails in the Mazatzals, but when you get there, there's no sign of them. I did North Peak last year and saw no sign of any trail intersecting North Peak below the MDT. Off of the MDT heading south from North Peak was Willow heading west, and then Rock Creek. Stay away from Rock Creek Trail, it's bad news.

Looks like a good loop option. Switch this map over to satellite and zoom in.

See a road through Pole Hollow Canyon halfway, top half.
Another road through the lower half, NF 414?
Looks like an open easy creekbed walk without the roads too.

The rock creek trail is great, it goes through the burn area and is a little faint. Sandy Saddle is also there, though faint. Never heard of Pole Hollow Trail, perhaps it became Forest Rd 414? Anyway, it's been hiked before. Looks like a nice loop, though a bit long. Have fun.

I've hiked Pole Hollow Canyon / NF 414 a couple of times. Should work fine. NF 414 is closed to vehicles at the north end.

I have read them I know it will be steep with a hard to follow trail . the downed trees don't bother me its the walls of catclaw and manzanita that I want to try and avoid .
