Moving to Casa Grande / Phoenix / Kayenta / Anywhere

Post by PaleoRob »

Well, I guess I'll have to change my screen name soon. My wife and I are going to be moving to Casa Grande before the end of the year. Listing the house for sale up in Page. No job yet, kinda scary, but my wife needs to go back to school full time. Even commuting to and from UofA, with the house prices in CG we'll save money over moving to El Pueblo. Big change - this will be my first time living off The Plateau since '99. Eeek!

What is the real worry is the fact of ancient artifacts being traded all over the world, having lost their provenience, etc. So much lost knowledge.

While I totally agree with you on the artifact market, all the folks in Europe and Japan that I know and other dealers work with are into the historic to contemporary work. Mainly the high end turquoise at $100+ a carat, Navajo,Zuni, Hopi jewelry and Northern Plains beadwork. Historic Apache material culture was strong for awhile but has calmed down and Western art and artifacts are still strong. Artifacts being famous leather workers in saddles, chaps, etc. and metal workers in spurs and such. G.S Garcia spurs can go for over $40K.
Interestingly the class of people in Japan that worked in leather were not too long ago the untouchables, like undertakers. Now you can't swing a feral cat in Tokyo without hitting a prestigious leather shop.

Well, people in Casa Grande have to find SOMETHING to do in their spare time...give 'em a break! Of course, Rob is a science teacher, he could easily find a use for unwanted cats...

Feral horses ran down the street this evening. The neighbor's dog's, Oso and Toby, gave chase.

Paul!

I went to red white and brew last night.. decent food. FOUR PEAKS beer selection was great. Had a large Hop Knot for happy hour prices.. and lemme tell you, when I left I was definitely happy.

btw, today is National Stout Day. many of the finer places are offering stouts and porters to celebrate. for instance, the watering hole inside whole foods of chandler is pouring Lost Abbey's "angel's share" imperial stout for only $5 a pint!! did you realize that it goes for $17 per bottle? insane deal. very limited release. i'll be there at 5 and i'll be in line w/ a cup looking like Oliver Twist.

I'm having a little "get together" this saturday the 5th, a couple of HAZ guys are coming by to share some craft beers and ribs, burgers. Kids welcome, it starts at 2pm on Sat and ends...?
if you want to swing by and chill for a while, PM me.

Tried to PM you, but it says, "The requested users to be added do not exist." ?? Are you a figment of our imagination?

It would be great to join/meet up with you and Ms TeWa this Saturday, but it would be afternoon. I'm going on a ride to Yarnell with work folks in the morning that will last till around 3:00-4:00... Will you be swilling `em down after that? If so me & Kat would love to show up!

Let me know where.

Bringing back the moving thread. While I will remain in CG for the time being, I am going to be living and working back in Page for the summer. Hooray!

Maybe a few hikes would be in order. If I am to do Telescope from Shorty as planned, I will need to train for that, at least getting 4,000' a week ( which hardly sounds like much ) for a few weeks before, so I may need to do the Spencer or something over there, since BM might not be suitable for that.

I'll be back from Costa Rica in May, looking for things to do! Spencer Trail is HOT in summer, but I have hiked it very early in the morning in May, June and Sept. It stays shady for quite awhile. Oh, I forgot, Jim is not an early bird! :)

Yeah, the Spencer may be hot, but Death Valley isn't known for it's cool, refreshing summer breezes. And it depends on when I get up. If I am lucky enough to get what I was told when I got hired, I'll be on days and getting up at 500 AM AZT will be normalish. If I get stuck on nights, well, let's not dwell on my fears.

This will be especially good for me, since I am craving red rocks. I like the desert here, but it is not the same. I need the canyons and slickrock and ruins and fossils. I don't feel at home down here.
