12,633 Feet? Let's Do It!

Post by Hippy »

Monday, July 30th 2012
We will be leading a very easy going paced hike up to the summit of The Tallest Mountain In Arizona.
It is roughly a 10 mile hike (that's round trip don't worry!)

Within those 5 miles to the summit we will gain 3300 feet of elevation, the trail head starts around 9300 feet and we will top out at 12,633...

This hike is being led by Haley & Vince (HippyHaley & GOYAAH), so there is the option of hiking at a slower(H) or faster(V) pace so no worries about being too slow or being bored (if you're a faster hiker!)
This is a great opportunity to go on a challenging hike with friends and take in the beautiful scenery at your own pace!

We will be leaving Sunday July 29th for the drive out to flagstaff, we will car or tent camp and set out on the hike long before the sun rises!
Leaving the trail head this early gives the slower paced hikers PLENTY of time to summit the Mountain and NO RUSH to get back down!
This scheduling will also leave us with the rest of monday (July 30th) to rest and relax in the happy little city of Flagstaff :)

Depending on how many people are attending there is (as always) the carpooling/caravan options.
If you'd like to drive please opt to take fellow hikers with you to save on fuel and keep our air cleaner :)
As of now there will be 3 seats open in our Subaru, any takers?

The link below is details on the hike.

Good luck with that. Sunrise is around 530, a little earlier perhaps with altitude, and you won't see anything until at the saddle, which is most of the way to the top. Keep that in mind. If you are going to go as slow as you indicate, you will want more like a 2 AM start. 330 only gives you 2 hours.

@Jim_H we just want to be on the mountain when the sunrises, we prefer crazy early starts especially when we're in such an "Earthy" part of the state, we want the rest of the day to relax and hang out in flag or maybe galavant down to Sedona or Jerome for some fun after. I'd rather not start at 7am and have less time for other things.
I was told sunrise is 630-ish anyway. doesn't really matter, we will be leaving the trailhead 330/4am july 30th. :D

Oh I missed the part about an oh dark hundred start as I only set my alarm when I have to go to the airport! If I go I can safely say my wife won't be with me. :D

I would like to join the slow group ... takes me about 7 or 8 hours to summit roundtrip. But I am a little scared off by the start time - what time are you planning on arriving in Flag the night before? Will there be enough time for a good night's sleep?
If you can do a cartwheel at that elevation, then good for you - I'm sure you'll find enough room for it! I think I would pass out if I tried one up there. :D

Oh yeah, and I was once chased off the summit by lightning in July ... it's no joke. Probably my most terrifying hiking moment.

I've been itching to do Humphrey's this summer and I'm off Mondays. Plus, the idea of doing it with fellow slow hikers and meeting other HAZers is definitely appealing. Consider me interested. keep me posted.

@Charger55 sounds good to me!!! You're lucky you caught me on an UPHILL, I don't classify myself as slow on flat :sl:

All possible hikers:
It seems I was able to get July 29th and July 30th off for this trip so my man and I might possibly head up to Flagstaff the night of the 28th or early morning the 29th. So if you can do those days no problem you are more than welcome to join us, my subaru seas 5 and has plenty of room for gear i think so far 3 seats are left open. Stake em while you can! :D

still plotting a "*&%#(* that's early" start on the 30th.

When I head up that way and just wanna car camp I pull off on Schnebly Hill rd off I17. Plenty of shady areas to camp.
