Heat Stroke

Post by Canyonram »

New summary article on Heat Stroke in 'Current Sports Medicine Reports.' Here's the abstract:

"When athletes, warfighters, and laborers perform intense exercise in the
heat, the risk of exertional heat stroke (EHS) is ever present. The recent
data regarding the fatalities due to EHS within the confines of organized
American sport are not promising: during the past 35 years, the highest
number of deaths in a 5-year period occurred from 2005 to 2009. This
reminds us that, regardless of the advancements of knowledge in the
area of EHS prevention, recognition, and treatment, knowledge has not
been translated into practice. This article addresses important issues
related to EHS cause and care. We focus on the predisposing factors,
errors in care, physiology of cold water immersion, and return-to-play or
duty considerations."

Not yet. But a bike store catering to triathletes might carry it.
Retail Locations and Retailer Requests:
To find a retailer in your area, call us toll free at (800) 669-1297 or e-mail us at info@eletewater.com. If your favorite retailer doesn't carry elete, please fill out our Retailer Request form and we will contact them with your request to purchase elete.
And you can buy it online. Buy the little 24.6ml pocket bottle. Then if you like it buy the 18.3oz economy refill. ( dead link removed )

ps Are you aware that AZ Hiking Shack is now at 34th St & Thomas?

The wildland firefighters are now not getting gatorade. My sister said they have learned that sitting in pallets at a fire camp they break down funny. Any way when they did use them it was suggested one gatorade to 4 waters.. so if one 12oz size then 4 12 oz... they are now using the smart waters or last I knew no sugars but electrolites...

There's a new triathlete store in downtown Tempe now. Its on Mill between the lightrail and the park.

@Tough_Boots
Congrats on the smoking thing. By far the hardest thing I have ever tried to do. I'm with you on the coffee. That is one habit that I will not try to hard on quitting.

I do miss my DC. Don't know what it is about that stuff, but yum good! Maybe we should start a support group. :D

I do find that Smartwater goes down easier than plain water. I haven't compared the numbers on the label, but I recently wondered whether it might have lower concentrations of elecrolytes than sweet electrolyte replacement drinks.

I buy Gatorade powder in the huge canister then mix it thinned out ~25% and it has worked fine for me, although I am always on the lookout for other more healthy (less sugar but not fake sweeteners) alternatives.

I pretty much gave up all soda 5-6 years ago, maybe having one once in a blue moon, and then only the non-corn syrup, non-fake sugars (they may not have sugar but what they usually use instead is worse for your health than sugar anyway).

Never smoked, never tried any illicit drugs, stay away from prescription drugs as much as possible, never got started on beer, never touched the hard stuff, maybe a shot-glass of wine a few times a year. I love the smell of fresh-ground coffee but don't drink it... I wake up and am ready to go within seconds so I see no need for a stimulant.

I've gone as much natural and/or organic foods as I can afford, with a diet high in veggies and fruit, no red meat (I love steaks but it's once a year now) no dairy, no gluten, etc., etc. and I just don't get sick. (Ok, just Valley Fever... you know, from being outside so much & breathing in the organism but I can live with it)
