If you had to choose ...

Post by cactuscat »

If you had to choose only one trail to hike on for the rest of your life, what would it be?
I pick GRCA's Kaibab - South and North - and that's not cheating, because I am the one who asked the question! :D

During season for me there's nothing like hiking the Highline/Swiftcurrent Trail in Glacier National Park.

As to my ashes (not sure how that got in the thread), interestingly enough I just updated my will to have my ashes scattered somewhere in the Western Superstitions, preferably the Cave Trail. Guess I better include the HAZ description so that my family, those who can get there, know where the Cave Trail is
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

Yes, just how did that get into the thread. :-k

However just dump mine in the stream just north of the Rogers Trough Trail Head so I can travel down past the cliff dwellings, Angel Basin, Fish Creek Canyon, the lakes :y: and into your water supply. :scared:

"would like to go back to Dark Canyon"! SAY WHEN! I've been trying to talk my so-called Tucson adventurers (NOTA BENE: bknorby & jrnorby) into joining me on a return trip to DC without success since last I DC'ed in aught-5. I just gotta stock up on some string cheese, and I'll be ready to go.

"If it was Utah the Hackberry Canyon, Yellow Rock and Upper Paria would be near the top". If my DC idea doesn't pique your interest, could I talk you into backpacking Section #8 of the Hayduke Trail, http://hayduketrail.org/Maps.html

? According to the following description:
"Section 8: Round Valley Draw, Utah to Willis Creek, Utah. 49.0 miles
Here the route descends the narrows of Round Valley Draw and continues down Hackberry Canyon to it's confluence
with the Paria River. The route goes up the Paria River, then Sheep Creek and then up and out of the narrows of
Willis Creek to the section end."

Section #8 includes most of the Utah places you've considered for interment. You could consider hiking Section #8 as homework for the hereafter.

It's just like a woman to ask a question like this. Why does it have to be a commitment, why does it have to be just one? There are thousands and thousands of trails out there, why must we limit ourselves to only one trail? Maybe some of us are still exploring new trails? Maybe some of us aren't ready to settle for the same trail, day in, day out, no matter how steep, exciting, and incredible it may seem the first few times you hike it? I for one want to keep exploring all manner and variety of trails, from the wide, ADA accessible ones with broad curves and gentle grades, to the narrow, rocky, steep ones that ascend steep slopes to a thin, pinnacle like peak or narrow rocky outcrop. I'm not a trail snob, I'll hike ones that have a lot of other hikers, and those that see very few, but I have standards, too. I won't hike just any trail, it has to go somewhere and have a destination. I always hike safe! I wear sunscreen, a hat in summer, carry plenty of food and water, and tell someone where I'm headed. ;)

May I plan either a return to Dark Canyon or going into Upper Paria and tour Kitchen and Starlight canyons ( been up both but didn't get to the ranch ruins in Kitchen nor to the cave with the picto in Starlight); then locate and go up Snake canyon the only sidecanyon off that section I haven't really done anything in. Deer Canyon is also up for a revisit with it's unusual Virgin Anasazi picto's .

Just have to get the boss to agree on the dates :)

You got me this time! I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about most (all?) things Southern Utah, but your references to Kitchen, Starlight, Snake and Deer Canyons are a mystery to me. I Googled all, but didn't find much of consequence about any of them. That said, I will come to learn, not to teach if yooz guys want any company on a May adventure to Utah.

Just one trail...Arizona Trail because it spans my home and so many wonderful chunks of my home from Grand Canyon to the Supes especially, and beyond...there are always options and THAT is not cheating because it is technically ONE trail :D

To get this thread back on track, there is a nice feature on HAZ that is underutilized. You can rank your top 20 favorite hikes. Go to a hike description and click on the heart icon. You can select what rank to give it. To see what others have selected, go to their profile page and look for a heart icon next to their avatar. I recently updated mine. A lot of members don’t have the heart icon because they haven’t selected any favorites.

And BTW, my choice would be the John Muir Trail.

If it is just the hike, then Blue Lakes Pass to Blue Lakes: http://hikearizona.com/photoset=16418

If it is to stay for a couple nights, then Ice Lakes Basin: http://hikearizona.com/photoset.php?ID=16257

I have issues about TELLING people what to do after I'm dead. Get it? OK, so there is my family standing around after my funeral, one of them is holding the urn with my ashes. Some of the family are getting kind of old, others may be on a fixed income, others are very busy with their lives. One of them says, "Jeez, why did she want us to put her ashes in a place we can't even find or get to? Let's just dump them into the Little Colorado River and call it good!"

I have issues about telling people what to do after I'm dead. Get it? Here's another example: My father-in-law wanted to be buried next to his first wife where there is a double headstone, somewhere in Omaha Nebraska. My husband and I split up, he abandoned our house in Eagar when I was still living in Flagstaff, took off for California, leaving behind most of his family's heirlooms AND his dad's ashes. I moved back into the Eagar house, where I now live with the cat he left behind, and also with his dad's ashes, which are on a shelf in the closet. I asked him if I could bring the urn of ashes to California with me and then we could take our kids and dump them off the end of the Oceanside pier. But he said, no, he thinks his dad has to be over there in friggin' Omaha! I have never even been to Omaha, and have no plans to go! So, Grandpa's ashes are still in the closet. They have been there for 8 years!

I have issues about telling people what to do after I'm dead. Get it? I'm dead, I don't get to dictate what people are going to do! It's just rude to ask that of people! When my mom and dad died we scattered their ashes nearby where they lived, we found a nice place. They didn't tell us where to do it, we just got together and decided. My dad's in the ocean by Kona, Hawaii, by where he died, and my mom's at Saguaro National Park West, near where she died.

Yeah, let's see, maybe I want to be scattered at Deer Creek Falls in Grand Canyon. So that way someone in my family either has to do a serious 4-day backpacking trip to get there, or spend thousands of dollars on a river trip to get there. Sheesh... It's just asking a lot of people, you know? You really don't get to boss people around after you are dead! You shouldn't do it while you are alive, either.

@azbackpackr Please... enough already don'cha think? :stop: ;)

After all, before this thread was hi-jacked (into one about strewing ashes) I believe it was about hiking one trail for Groundhog's Day... over and over and over...

@skatchkins I'll second both your choices!

However... that might change after my trip to Utah in May.

MY BAD! I'm the one responsible for the thread shift to "ashes". I just reread cactuscat's original post, and its intent was as you so correctly stated "about hiking one trail for Groundhog's Day... over and over and over...". That said, is it too late to change my choice(s) to NONE? Tumamoc Hill or any other trail, for that matter, every day for the rest of my life? YIKES! @Grim Reaper, I'll be sitting on my couch watching NASCAR and WWF Wrasslin' awaiting your arrival to save me from a fate worse than death.

On another note, would you care to share the details of your upcoming trip to Utah?
