Re: Hiking cartoons -maybe we'll use this thread as a reposi
I'm not a fan of the Grand Canyon area... just too many people. But visiting there some years ago, sitting out on the South Rim close to a father/son pair... we were all watching the antics of a crazy tie dyed, hippy type. He seemed enthralled by a couple of soaring Eagles... and was running, jumping and waving to them... trying to call them over to him. Oddly, the two big birds turned and in close pattern soared our way. As they swooped close to the edge of the canyon the crazy guy made a dashing leap, grabbing a bird in each hand... and all three plummeted towards the bottom of the canyon
For an instant there was dead silence... then the Father turned to the son and in a most serious voice: "...Well...Son... here there is a lesson to be learned... it should set to your mind one of our more valuable parables... and can you tell me what that is?"
The son walked over to the edge of the canyon... gazed over the lip... turned back to his Dad "... yes Sir... that would be all about killing two birds with one stoner?"

I only re-started hiking earlier this year, so my 8-year old daughter had to learn the hard way what happens to Dad post-hike. I think the exact sequence of events was:SpiderLegs wrote:Pretty close to the reaction I get too. * I open door
* She runs up and hugs me before I could stop her
* She shrieks
* She runs while shrieking to the bathroom
Not sure what she did in there but the faucets were running pretty furiously.

Re: Hiking cartoons -maybe we'll use this thread as a reposi
Oh, skatchins, we don't need to rely on reviews from other states that are posted on funny websites with international audiences. Here are some actual, verbatim quotes of our very own McDowell-Sonoran Preserve from actual Yelpers. I personally certify that each, individual quote below made me LITERALLY LOL. LOL, remember, stands for "laugh out loud." So, yes, these are 7 specific, distinct instances of me sitting at my computer and actually laughing out loud:

- There were a couple of volunteer guys greeting people and helping them figure out where to go. If they weren't there, it would've been very confusing to find out where to go. It's not intuitive. Despite the models and maps, it's not clearly marked until you walk into the preserve for 1000 ft or so.
- [Describes some views of other mountain ranges in the area.] However, there wasn't much else to look at. Except for a lizard, we didn't see any animals or wildlife. We heard a few birds squawking to warn each other that people were nearby, but we didn't see them. It gets kind of boring if you don't have anything to look at on a trail.
It's a great workout, and today I learned that the further you go into a specific trail, the rougher the path gets.
If you like brown, this is the place to hike.
I would probably only go here once in awhile due to it being a loooong drive from my house, but the benefit to that is that there is more to see out here due to it being more a part of the desert.
You don't have as much of a panoramic view as you do when you're hiking camelback, but the trail is very peaceful for a Sunday afternoon. This is more of a relaxing hike than a exercise hike. It's a good running hike, since you don't have much of an incline, but be careful of all the rocks and unsteady gravel.
The only con about this place is that to get to the trails you have to walk over a bridge made of metal slats which my dog HATES. She refuses to walk over it which means I have to carry her and she's not a little dog so it's no easy feat. [Personal note: the "bridge" he's referring to takes approximately 4 seconds to walk over. Maybe 5 if you're texting while walking.]
