The 2023?!?! Cyclical totals discussion thread.

Post by Jim »

How are things progressing this year? In keeping with the idea that you are only as good as the numbers you post, I'm up to 61,436' of elevation for the year and a modest 132 miles.
Added August 2019: Looking back 10 years later, I honestly can't think of anything more offensive or unhealthy to say about one's hiking, than the above statement. Thats was my OP in 2009. Hiking should never just be about the stats recorded.

January 31, 2023: Have at it.

Cabeza and Organ Pipe are along the Mexico border between Tucson and Yuma. The main attractions are dodging immigrants, smugglers, and military artillery--and exploring what all three have left behind. :)

With a week left in the year, I can finally start talking about 2014. I'm really happy with what I hiked this year. I'm over 335,000', might top 340,000', but I also might not. Fine with either. Next year, I would be happy to be in the 200,000s, just putting out a good effort and enjoy hikes. No plans or serious desire to be back over 300,000' or exceed this year's total. I would like to try and exceed a daily record by doing over 10,000' in a day, but we'll see. I would like to do more non-hiking based excercise, but that has no bearing on HAZ.

Well, I did pass 50,000 feet which was Jim_H's challenge for me, when I was below 40,000 in November. This was after not doing anything at all for 4 months straight. And, I'll probably pass 350 miles hiking by the end of the week. So, that is pretty good for a year where I didn't do much for four months, and didn't do much at all, period. I did go backpacking 6 times, though, and camping about 10 times. I went solo car camping several times, and did one short solo backpack, which had been on my "to-do" list. I had wanted to find out how comfortable I'd be camping by myself. It had been many years since I had solo backpacked. It was fine. You just need a good book to read, or you might get tired of your own company!

In 2014, though, I have several Lower Colorado River kayaking adventures planned, and want to ride my bikes more. Those won't figure into the analysis page for miles and AEG, but I hope to create a Colorado River Canoe/Kayak Trail in segments on HAZ. Hope to write up a bunch of new descriptions for California. I love how there are all these "Hikebot" descriptions I can upgrade to regular descriptions, here in San Diego County.

Current plans on calendar: Lower Colorado River Canoe/Kayak Trail: January--Yuma area, Laguna Dam to West Wetlands Park, day trip. February, Walter's Camp to Squaw Lake or Martinez Lake. March, Hoover Dam to Willow Beach (Black Canyon.)

There are plenty of non-hiking exercises that HAZ keeps track of. Biking and running seem it be most used, but I've seen posts on snowshoeing, various types of skiing, and even the dubious trend of gym/treadmill miles

I think what Jim means is no way to keep track of bike miles or kayaking miles, etc., on here. Snowshoeing is one that goes into the stats page, if I'm not mistaken, whereas XC skiing does not.

I can tell you that XC skiing or kayaking 5 miles is a LOT harder (for me) than hiking 5 miles. However, riding a bike 5 miles is generally easier than hiking the exact same 5 miles. Take the same exact trail, not too difficult or steep (or I can't ride a bike up it!!!) and compare how hard it is to accomplish via snowshoes, XC skis, hiking or biking. I'd say biking is easiest, followed by hiking, xc skiing, and snowshoeing. That's for me. Others may order them differently. If the trail is very steep I personally will order them differently. In that case, hiking is easiest, followed by snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and biking. In fact, if it is very steep, XC skiing and biking become impossible for me.

Haz keeps track of all of that. But they don't qualify as "self-propelled" because as you note, biking 50 miles really can't be compared to hiking 50 miles. But even the graphs on the home page let you see what your biking stats are. A lot of people ride bikes for exercise. A much smaller percentage kayak as frequently so some of the tracking features aren't as robust as the more popular options.

Thanks, I'll check out the bike miles option. Hadn't noticed that!

If I am able to hike then I will probably go over 340,000'. If I get sick, then no, I probably won't.

Oh, OK. Whatever. I know you're just teasing me back for my trekking pole comment, but how many times have I been sick over the last year? 5 times, easily. How many sick people did I triage yesterday? 60? I can't say how I'll feel Monday or Tuesday, as I was pretty achy last night.

Also, I was referring to free weights. I would never log that, here or anywhere. Miles or elevation are one thing, pounds and reps are another.

Based on stats, this year has been by far my "worst" hiking year as I may not even break 30,000' AEG. However, with my tour guide job I was able to spend somewhere in the vicinity of 80 days at the Grand Canyon, and had copious opportunities for landscape photography, resulting in an incredibly satisfying year for me. I probably could have gotten much more mileage and elevation if I would have sacrificed photography time and naps in the van between tours, but I think overall I enjoyed this year much more than 2011 or 2012. My biggest hurdle right now is not having a reliable vehicle to get me out of the city, but once tour season comes back around in March, it will be back to the fun times! Really, March can't come fast enough for me right now, especially with a 3 night GC permit coming up the first weekend of March :D I hope to have a better statistical year next year, but just being out at the Canyon for another 80+ days would be great on its own.

I wouldn't log free weights, either. I log outdoor stuff. I have been known to log swimming, too, which in some pools is indoors.

I worked most of the last 5 days, so today and tomorrow are it. 340,---'? Maybe. Ortega is the easiest way to get AEG fast around here. So, I guess you know what I'll hike today. Maybe something light just to round out the year tomorrow.

Anyone planning to pull a Johnlp(2012) in 2014?

I noticed only 2, 600,000' hikers this year, half of last 2012. I'd ask if the other 2 got lazy, but 600,000' is an insane amount to hike in a year, averaging 50,000' a month and all.
