Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun
Well, I did Sierra Blanca and wore shorts for some reason. Not warm, at all. At my car it was only 49 when I finished, so I used my seat warmers. First time since maybe January, and here it was nearing 100 by this time last year, though not up that high.

Seat warmers for 49 degrees? I think you need to man up a little :wlift:

Hell no! I was cold! It wasn't all that windy, but it was cold on the mountain.friendofThundergod wrote:@Jim_H

I love heated seats. I'll drive around with the sunroof open when it's snowing if I have the burner on high.

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun
Yee Haw! Just got the first reverse 911 of the year warning that my area is already flash flooding. We are all home safe above the creek, but this confirms the forecast that does not bode well for the meteor peeping plans.
hoping it will blow through and be nice dark and clear and that the weather forecasters are wrong.

It's also too cloudy and rainy here for meteor viewing.

A rare Memorial Day Weekend thunderstorm in Alamogordo. I think, rare. It came over from Cruces and the Organ Mountains, and then built up in the Basin. A couple of nice rain passes for at least 20 minutes. Radar estimates > 1/4 inch.

We've had a little rain in Williams overnight, and I presume it also affected the Slide Fire area. Chilly here, too!

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun
It's the ghost of Memorial Day Weekend's Past!!!
While it was 95 and 93 degrees on Sunday and Monday of this weekend last year, yesterday was mild-it didn't touch 80, and today we are at 69 degrees and overcast. It just rained for a minute! Reminds me of my Flagstaff Memorial Days with snow or rain, but hey, no wind! Can't complain though, as once this low moves east we should reach the low 90s and it will be hot and dry in Tucson. Which, I look forward to.
Still, I think this is funny. I was going to hike yesterday at 3 rivers or Sierra Blanca, but that became Ortega and then once I realized I had stuff to do and some overcast clouds and smoke haze moved in, I opted to relax and do stuff in the yard. I thought I would reschedule to today, but it's cool and moist at 4400', so not weather that gets me up to 11,000'! Maybe I'll hike Ortega later, but it is pretty funny to have this sort of weather this time of year, except this spring has been rather cool.
I checked the Ski Santa Fe Webcam, they had a few inches of snow, and as Bart can tell you, it has snowed plenty on Pike's Peak.

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun
We had rain in Williams a couple of days ago, but today was very warm and sunny, and the wind has abated, at least for the time being. I went to the South Rim for my job, and it was lovely there, too. A bit hazy, but that seems the norm.

Snow showers Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Greer. Some of the showers resulted in a quick 2-3 inches accumulation above 9500 feet. The trails at Sunrise were covered. Today was beautiful and back to seasonal norms.

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun
One Memorial Day I remember in the White Mountains, maybe 2010, there was a big snowstorm, and people camped at Big Lake got over a foot of wet, heavy spring snow, and they were stuck there until they brought the plows up. Of course it melted quickly. Memorial Day of 2011 the Wallow Fire started. But it was really cold that weekend, but incredibly windy.chumley wrote:Snow showers Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Greer. I always try to remind people how cold the camping is going to be over Memorial Day and they just flat never believe me. I think they have fun, anyway!

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun
Well, I bet it wasn't cold if you camped along the Verde River or lower Colorado River!
I think the last Memorial Day snow was 2008. 2010 was a nice dry time as I was finishing my Gila BP trip and drove up 191 from Morenci, post Silver City. Even though I hated it at the time, it is better to have a late few inches of wet snow, than to not.
I think the cold spring is coming to an end, today, in the Tularosa Basin. My last few days here are forecast to be in the low to middle 90s. I rather enjoyed the last 2 days in the high 70s, even if I didn't hike up high, in part due to cool temps. It does seem cool to cold, for late May, and the Rockies have been trapped in a continued winter! Seems that way to me. I'll call that the gods giving me justification to abandon plans for a Colorado or northern NM trip in June.

True, Memorial Day in the desert would have been warm. Therefore, people in Phoenix can't believe there will be freezing temps at night in Greer! Flagstaff was 26 one morning last week.

My goodness how it has cooled off up here. 36 this morning in Williams! Brr! It's supposed to be 85 and windy today, so it'll warm up.

I like that climate! I did enjoy California, even though I am more at home in Arizona. Since my current job is seasonal, until about the end of October, I plan to spend some time out there again in the cool seasons.

Re: 2014: Rain, Snow, Wind, and Sun
Now, I don't know how accurate it is, but the Tucson NWS reported some storms over the mountains, like the Catalina Mountains, around mid-day today, with totals between 1/4 and 1/2 inch, and mountain Lemmon appears to have a stretch of 1/2 an inch of rain over it. Hard to tell exactly where it fell, but 1/2 an inch up top would be impressive right now.
