PRESCOTT - A local Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation committee member struck and critically injured a bull elk with his pickup after leaving a fund-raiser for the animal.
The accident occurred May 17 on Arizona 89 at about 10:30 p.m.
"He was standing in the middle of the road when I came around the corner," said Scott Glattfelder, who estimated the 3-year-old elk's weight at more than 700 pounds.
"Bull elk" means an antlered elk.

I believe their "elk" are our moose. Need an engineer to calculate force of 400 kilos at 60 km/h ...

True. And moose have a higher center of gravity than elk. But I think point is illustrated quite well either way.

Insurance fraud. People claiming to have been hit by deer. To the tune of $5 million.
And you wonder why Pennsylvania leads the country in number of deer hit by motorists?
Forty-one people in Philadelphia are facing charges in what prosecutors call an elaborate insurance fraud scheme that used dead deer to fake car accidents.
“They actually kept deer carcasses at their shop and would pour deer blood over cars and they would simulate accidents and take photographs that they called Hollywood photos,” Williams said.

I attempted to run a similar scam back in Michigan with mixed results. I could not get a hold of any deer, so I was using human cadavers from the local morgue instead, not nearly as effective and it raised far more questions then I was prepared to deal with..

If PA didn't overhunt the wolves and cougars into extinction, then the deer population would be in check, thus reducing the # of accidents caused by deer, which would lower their car insurance rates. Deer kill more people than wolves and courgars combined. PA and other states can re-introduce them into the wilderness, but they won't. Serves them right.

Bill Clinton's campaign adviser while working on another campaign for a PA politician was asked about the state. He said that Pennsylvania has Pittsburgh in the west, Philadelphia in the east and Alabama in the middle. Pretty accurate assessment.

Been observing elk when walking or hiking from my home in Payson. Walked up on one that was sitting on the ground and it stood up less than five feet directly in front of me. It was a large cow elk, had to check for humps to make sure it was not a camel.

Somewhat graphic photos in a report of a moose-vehicle collision in Maine. Driver sustained some broken bones but will be fine.

When I was stationed in Alaska in 1970 a fellow soldier in my company was decapitated when his MG Midget hit a moose. Being so low the MG went under the moose.

Have you noticed also on 260, past Star Valley, on up to the Rim, there is a line of elk fence now, on both sides of the new highway? It's not easy to spot all the time--sometimes it's back in the woods a bit. I don't know what ADOT's plan is regarding building more of them, though.
