New Prove-You're-A-Citizen law
When Governor Brewer signs this into law, can anyone see some unintended consequences? For those who don't know, this law will allow law enforcement officials to require anyone they come into contact with to prove that they are legally allowed to be in this country whether as a citizen or guest. For the record a valid driver's license is NOT considered proof-of-citizenship. Does this mean that those of us who appear as if we might be foreign have to carry around our birth certificates?
I'm not that worried about myself because I'm a 6'4" white dude, but then I remember reading about 80-year-old nuns being strip-searched by airport security.
As for hiking, I always carry my wallet with me because I'd rather risk losing it on the trail than having it stolen out of my car. But I'm not about to carry my birth certificate around. Anyhoo, this law will probably be struck down by the courts.

@Jim Lyding
Since I was born in the BRD, I have no state-issued birth certificate.. guess I should renew my passport and start carrying it.
Oh and no real ID in AZ, at least that I'm aware of.. even if it were so now, I did not have to furnish my report of birth abroad to get my license, just surrender my Maryland one.

All I would have to do is explain the struggle I went through in college after graduating from the AZ public school system and they would know I was definitely a native and cut me loose!

What about that bill or law requiring presidential candidates to prove they are a citizen to be on the ballot in Arizona? Has anyone heard about that?

Yes, don't get me going on that.. as far as I know, it's already enumerated in the Constitution.. yet more waste from our state government purely for political purposes.jhodlof experience wrote:What about that bill or law requiring presidential candidates to prove they are a citizen to be on the ballot in Arizona? Rumor is that she has forbidden anyone from playing Slim Whitman's song, "Indian Love Call" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Attacks!jeffmacewen wrote:Can someone prove to me that Jan Brewer isn't actually a Martian?
OK new cup brewing.Richie Norris, a teenage boy from Kansas, inadvertently discovers the Martians' deadly weakness—the noise of Slim Whitman's song, "Indian Love Call" after rescuing his grandma from a retirement home, which causes the Martians' brains to burst. Both Richie and his grandma broadcast the song via radio, defeating the Martians. They are awarded the Medal of Honor for their heroic efforts by Taffy Dale on the steps of destroyed Capitol building. Humans begin cleaning up the Martians' destruction in an attempt to improve their lives.

Re: New Prove-You're-A-Citizen law
I see the "clean elections" law is going to the voters for affirmation. While it sounds like a good thing, giving more people access to the reins and all, if this legislature is what it gets, I think it's time for a change. ???

I think Bill Burton has said it best: "I can't imagine Arizona voters think their tax dollars are well served by a Legislature that is less focused on their lives than on fringe right-wing-radio conspiracy theories."

Since she just signed it into law, I'd say they the legislature and governor think that they're spending their time (and thus our money) wisely.jeffmacewen wrote:I think Bill Burton has said it best: "I can't imagine Arizona voters think their tax dollars are well served by a Legislature that is less focused on their lives than on fringe right-wing-radio conspiracy theories."

Re: New Prove-You're-A-Citizen law
I think she is thinking more of securing her party's primary nomination - I think this will go a long way towards that. I know several folks who say "I don't like her, but if she signs this she has my vote."dysfunction wrote:Since she just signed it into law, I'd say they the legislature and governor think that they're spending their time (and thus our money) wisely.jeffmacewen wrote:I think Bill Burton has said it best: "I can't imagine Arizona voters think their tax dollars are well served by a Legislature that is less focused on their lives than on fringe right-wing-radio conspiracy theories."

Re: New Prove-You're-A-Citizen law
My opinion on the matter is stated earlier in the thread. But I have to make this single observation.
In watching the protestors marching and gathering near the capitol, I believe it would go over a little better in getting people to agree with you or understand your viewpoint if you did not wave Mexican flags.
Just sayin.

Re: New Prove-You're-A-Citizen law
I actually came to the exact same conclusion this morning just in passing by an AZ Daily Star with a huge picture splashed all over the front page of people demonstrating with a Mexican flag. During the forced relocation in the 40's, Japanese-Americans couldn't find enough ways to prove that they were Americans and had renounced Japan and it's policies. They were frequently seen carrying American flags and wearing the same as a pin on their clothing.chumley wrote:My opinion on the matter is stated earlier in the thread. Contrast this to the issue at hand. You are either an American or you are something else. If you are just visiting, you are excluded...but, please leave after a few weeks when your visit is up. If you want to come here, work hard, make a new life then I am happy to welcome you but you must become an American. If you are a Mexican or want to be a Mexican, that can be easily arranged. Protesting a law that makes your ethnic group "Less American" by trying to prove you are a Mexican is nonsensical. However; does a few people being dumb about where their allegiances lie at a protest it make the law any less potentially-racist? I think not...
