Hiking vehicles

Post by rally_toad »

What kind of vehicles do you guys all drive when your going hiking? Im thinking about investing in a 4wd high clearance Jeep or something of the sort so I could get to some places where I definitely couldnt get to with what Im driving now (73 mustang):) I saw a Jeep Grand Cherokee today for $2600 and I was thinking about checking it out. What "hiking vehicle" is easiest to drive and which gets the best gas mileage (even though I know most wouldnt be too fuel efficient.)

@chumley I have a CD player in my Corolla and I never use it. USB MP3 all the way.
I went to Joshua Tree last Saturday to pickup my new rescued dog. I put in a 4gig USB stick drove there and back and never heard the same song twice.

What's that?
It's a 2006, so no MP3 option that year. Didn't have time to buy an adapter before heading out the door this morning.

My Xterra is a 2006. I have the premium sound system option. It will read CDs that are in MP3 format as well as WAV format. That's about as close to MP3s as that year got, I guess. What trim model do you have, Off-Road?

Will have to check when my S.O. returns from work. So far after one off pavement trip we are pretty happy. Expands our options for what to do on the weekends.

Had some General Grabbers put on two weeks ago. No more having to worry about blowing a tire every time I leave pavement. :)

Went from 205/70/15 to 205/75/15, so an .8" difference. I was originally considering 215/75/15s, but the ones I got are much more practical for my driving. There aren't any issues with rubbing, MPG didn't take too much of a hit, my speedometer is actually more accurate now (according to my GPS), and I still get all the perks of the beefier tread.

It's been long enough I don't recall for sure but I think they were 215/70/15's. I remember having a tough time finding the brand & size I wanted in stock and ended up with Big-O tires.

Cool! You guys are now talking about Tires! Ok, I know how much Ken likes the Generals....

I'm looking a Replacing my Tires within the next couple of Months and getting All-Terrains to replace the Street Tires...However, I just blew a Tire on I-10 an hour ago, so I'm going to probably have to buy one in the next day or so...I'll use it as a Spare until I can get 3 more,

But I have to decide what Tires I'm going to buy in a couple of months so I know what Tire to buy now, if that makes sense...

This Thread has already discussed Generals a little...What other Tires have people had success with? You guys know that I do a lot of Dirt Roads and some of them can be pretty Rocky and Rough...My biggest Fear most of the time is cutting these Street Tires that I have on now...I know I really need something Beefier...I'm not going to go larger than the 16s I have on now because I want to try to maintain some decent Gas Mileage....And I really can't afford to replace Tires every 20,000 Miles so I want some durability as well....

Go....

I saw the ultimate TH vehicle in UT last week. It was a camper built on a Ford F550 chassis with enormous army tires, lifted an extra foot and a half.

I wish I had taken a picture. Apart from having four doors and being a little more lifted, it was quite similar.

@Outdoor Lover
I would go to tirerack and check the surveys on all terrains. I just bought 4 Generals yesterday at Sears. I went with all season because tire
noise gets old and I haven't cut any tires on the Sierra Ancha, Mazatzal or Supes forest roads with normal tires. If you go to retailmenot
you can always get a coupon code for Sears too. Libby takes 235/70/16.

I change hundreds and hundreds of tires :? The tires we use on our patrol cars are BF Goodrich. The BF Goodrich tires we use are the speed rated tires you would find on a sports car and they do a very good job. But BF Goodrich all terrain tires I feel don't do very well. I just don't think they wear well. On our 4x4 patrol cars we use General all terrain tires. Generals are very good tires. But again they wear out fast. In my experience I like Yokohama. They ride nice and quite on the street and last longer than any all terrain I've used.

Something important to consider is that your tire will be on pavement more than anywhere else(unless the vehicle is a dedicated off road vehicle). So for me when I go to buy tires I look for tires that last, are quiet on the road and can handle occasional off-road. :stop: I know this will get some off-road people all worked up but your car has to drive to the point where you go off road and that's the important part of the trip

Kind of Ironic...As many semi-gnarly and gnarly roads (for me anyway) that I've been on, including a little last weekend, I end up blowing a tire on the Freeway in Town...I have Michelin 235/70/R16 104T on right now....Can't find a Nail, not sure what happened...So not sure if it can be "fixed" yet...But I want to be informed before I ever go in to the Tire Shop...Seems like a lot of people are liking Generals, but you say they don't last long? I was looking at the General Grabber AT2...But Yokohamas have also been recommended to me by Discount Tire, which is 300 yards from my House....

I would hardly say that I do occasional Off Road...I'm probably on Dirt 40% of the time...I really don't do hardly any City Driving....I'm always headed out of Town....

johnr1 highly approved of Tonto's Yokohamas and as you know, John was in the racing business. I'm no tire expert but that's what Tonto and Tonto Jr were/are wearing. So far, so good.
For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.

The Generals wear out fast on our patrol car ;) I don't know how they would do on a civilian car. My guess is they would do very well. I've never seen one separate due to an imperfection and they also repair well. :)

Now on the other hand there are Firestone and Bridgestone. I know there will be people who like them but in my experience they are the WORST TIRES EVER MADE!! They don't wear even, they're always going out-of-round, they're hard to balance and they are one of the few tires that separate no matter how old or new they are :x

I have an old Honda Accord which I drive a lot of places I probably shouldn't. Should I think about getting some non-standard tires for it? Is that advisable for a regular sedan?
