Moving to Casa Grande / Phoenix / Kayenta / Anywhere

Post by PaleoRob »

Well, I guess I'll have to change my screen name soon. My wife and I are going to be moving to Casa Grande before the end of the year. Listing the house for sale up in Page. No job yet, kinda scary, but my wife needs to go back to school full time. Even commuting to and from UofA, with the house prices in CG we'll save money over moving to El Pueblo. Big change - this will be my first time living off The Plateau since '99. Eeek!

I just moved back to Eagar, after having not lived here for 13 years.

It looks like I might have an opportunity to get a nice rental here for very cheap (due to friends). That's all up in the air right now, though. I'm still in the RV. Cheapest monthly RV rate I've seen in 11 years of the nomadic life. There are the usual hiking and biking, and a bit of kayaking. Also there are music jams and open mic, which I enjoy.

It's nice to go to the store for a quart of milk and a dozen eggs without feeling like you're taking your very life in your hands.

I sold that to the neighbor. He moved away, so I don't know where it is now, or if he still owns it. What a ride!

Folks, so far I like being back in Round Valley, (Springerville-Eagar). Ask me in a year (if I spend the winter here). It's dead quiet here. You can see the Milky Way from the middle of town, where I'm in an RV park. There is no background traffic drone such as I had in Yuma, Tucson, Flagstaff, Needles, or Williams---places I've lived in the last 11 years in the RV. I don't feel like I'm taking my very life in my hands just to go get a dozen eggs and a quart of milk. There are two grocery stores, two hardware stores, four thrift stores, two Dollar Generals, and a bicycle shop. What more do you need?

@Pivo
Internet? Yuma, Flagstaff, and most other towns where I've lived didn't have Trader Joe's, and I almost never go there, despite spending so much time in Tucson lately. Haven't set foot in one in at least 3 years. Seems like a glorified Sprouts to me. Expensive coffees, etc. Very expensive snack type things. Bulk foods you can also get at Sprouts. I have never bought much there. So, no, I don't miss it. Others might say, what about a gear store? I buy most of my gear online. What about clothing? I buy almost all my clothes on eBay and thrift stores, and most of my clothing lasts more than 5 years.

I would say, eclectic live music, interesting festivals, people I have more in common with, such as in Flag or Tucson. Spanish club, lots of music jams to pick from. Those things I will probably miss after a while. Shopping stuff--I literally hate shopping, for one thing. If it can be bought online, that's how I buy it.

And I might miss the river. But I can go there in winter.

That was not expected. Looks like Tucson is out, after all.

I do miss not having a TJ's in the area. I would agree on internet, outdoor's people and a decent wine shop.

I don't imbibe, so I won't miss that. I did really enjoy summers in Flagstaff. Lots to do, when I wasn't working.

LoL I've always considered Sprouts to be the glorified Trader Joe's. Just left Sprouts with a handful of groceries for $70... and they tried to charge me for a bag, which I refuse to do on principle.

Expensive snacks and coffee at TJ's?!? We must not be going to the same Sprouts/Trader Joe's's. Coffee is cheap at TJs and they have cheaper snacks that are better than most anywhere else, unless you maybe count the low quality Kroger junk.

Edit: anyway to keep it on topic: I like the Eagar area, and could even see moving there someday, but for that crazy wind.
