PRESCOTT - A local Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation committee member struck and critically injured a bull elk with his pickup after leaving a fund-raiser for the animal.
The accident occurred May 17 on Arizona 89 at about 10:30 p.m.
"He was standing in the middle of the road when I came around the corner," said Scott Glattfelder, who estimated the 3-year-old elk's weight at more than 700 pounds.
"Bull elk" means an antlered elk.

Yikes! That road has plenty of animal traffic. I'm glad you're OK. Sorry about the van.

Yeah, too bad about the van. Not mine, belongs to my employer, and they do have a spare for me to drive for the rest of the tour season. I have about 5 more on-call days left until the end of October, end of season. I want to quit NOW, but I agreed to stick it out.

It's been two weeks since I've been out hiking and I'm getting crotchety.
But in a kind and thoughtful way.

Apparently deer are a problem on runways too.
https://gma.yahoo.com/plane-makes-emerg ... ories.html
An American Airlines flight bound for Gulfport, Mississippi, had to make an emergency landing in North Carolina today after striking a deer upon takeoff...
"The airplane came immediately back to the airport and landed safely. There was fuel leaking from the aircraft, so passengers deplaned on the runway and firetrucks did hose the plane down. The passengers have been bused back to the terminal and will get a new aircraft," American Airlines said in its statement.
In October 2010, a US Airways jet arriving from Miami, Florida, plowed through a herd of deer shortly after landing at the same Charlotte airport.

These guys were loafing and grazing on the South end of Payson the other day. The deer further South near Deer Creek were shy and I was unable to photograph them.
