Hiking vehicles
What kind of vehicles do you guys all drive when your going hiking? Im thinking about investing in a 4wd high clearance Jeep or something of the sort so I could get to some places where I definitely couldnt get to with what Im driving now (73 mustang):) I saw a Jeep Grand Cherokee today for $2600 and I was thinking about checking it out. What "hiking vehicle" is easiest to drive and which gets the best gas mileage (even though I know most wouldnt be too fuel efficient.)

Re: Hiking vehicles
Reminds me when my brother and I used to take my grandmas scooter to the empty lot behind her house and make dirt jumps for it. We would bring her scooter back covered in dust and she would get so mad at us. But, she never told us to not take it to the lot. She knew what we were going to do. Oddly, we never broke it. Aww, memories.

There is a tread kit for them. They made 9 of these suckers for redbull and I used to see one of these on the mountain I used to ski patrol and it was pretty cool. Can't believe they are selling them off. The speakers are pretty cool.

Re: Hiking vehicles
The interior needs to be converted into living space, though. I wonder what the gas mileage is like? Probably not too great.
When I was at a beach town in Nicaragua last week I saw a group of French people with four small 4-wd motorhomes/campervans. Only one of the vans looked like a familiar American model. I would imagine they were some of those intrepid travelers with lots of dough traveling to Tierra del Fuego. Doable if you have tons of money and manage to not get robbed or shot.
When I was doing occasional search and rescue, there was a team member who had a 4 wd motorhome, a Chinook, which I envied:

I'd rather have a motor home. I ought to sell that house and buy one.

Re: Hiking vehicles
I love my xterra despite the 20 MPG mileage. I have a 2WD and have sometimes treated it like a 4WD.....taken it places it had no business being. Mud, water, rock and sand...I took the X-terra there. She did well
And it has plenty of room for me to sleep in the cargo area!

Actually I can imagine one of these being passed up by either a blue and white sammy or red 4x4 ranger with some snowbirds from Minneosta at the wheel.

For sure! My Sammy can still do 75 on the highway. Ok, so it must be level ground, any incline and it's a whole new ball game.SuperstitionGuy wrote:Actually I can imagine one of these being passed up by either a blue and white sammy

I used to have one of those. Kind of a scary vehicle, I thought. Too small.

Re: Hiking vehicles
On our Colorado trip I came across the perfect vehicle... unfortunately it wasn't for sale at any price (let alone my $4000 budget).
So even though the Pathfinder performed admirably on the 4x4 trails we drove, some very rough, it will be sold along with the Samurai. Then next year we'll be back with the new-to-us well-modified '99 Cherokee... 5.5" lift running 33" or 35" tires. With luck and plenty of $$$$ I'll have it complete within a month.
