Grand Canyon National Park is beginning civic engagement to seek comments on implementing a three-year pilot advance day-use reservation system to manage day-use visitation to the Tuweep Visitor Use Area including all park areas within Toroweap Valley and the Kanab Plateau. A $2 ticket fee per vehicle is proposed for visitors to get to Tuweep.

@hikeaz
If you drive all the way up there, the $2 charge seems trivial, although recreation.gov might have an administrative fee on top of that. I have only been there once, and I really can't say if 20 vehicles per day is the right number or not.

Based on the cost of gas to get there, $2 is what you find leftover in the car cushions...not sure how effective this fee will be at changing anything.

I think I read they are trying to reduce visitation due to overloaded parking lots...about the only annoyance is that you need to stop and get a permit, which would be a change.

If The Wave/Havasu, et al are any indicator, permits drive UP visitation, especially by the 'instragram-set"..

Causation vs. correlation? I'm pretty sure both had permit requirements long before the instagram-set existed.

Before permits, The Wave had near no one. I can attest. May not JUST be instagram, but the internet was a double-edged sword as well.
Hell... they now have a 35 mph speed limit near the silly Forrest Gump spot in Monument Valley trying to protect the insta-schlemiels, and kali folks (and others) STILL get run over holding selfie sticks... standing in the middle of a state highway.

An acquaintance just got back from THE Wave and she said: "been blessed and lucky to have been there 3 times now but thinking it's my last time....60 people now is stupid and ridiculous. The selfie groups that took a zillion selfie pics...clothing changes etc. We had to ask to get by and take our couple pics and move on."

I have never had any desire to go there, even when I was living in Page in 2016. There are other areas with similar features where there are no crowds. For me, solitude is more important than specific scenery.

My previous Wave visits were prior to permits and from several cross country access points. I never saw anyone there. Supposedly a German film came out years ago with some footage from there which kicked off a spurt of European visitors to that site on their holiday visits. More exposure= more people. I too will likely never go back there.

More exposure = managing agency starts managing. Rarely, if ever, hiking/exposing the 70% less used will never work. Hiking with anyone that primarily empowers best-of $ocial train-wrecks or primarily lurks equal-homepage-exposure member-driven is your inner voice exposing the real you. Journey is an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1973. The hike is the experience. @hikeaz introduced me to the Wave. Like friends hiking Piestewa or anywhere, the workout is a solid like. Two dollars seems reasonable. When I see proof that requiring a permit to some rarely used gem like [ Alder Creek Trail #82 ] drives UP visitation, the sky will be filled with pigs.
