Red Tanks Cutoff vs official route of the Red Tanks trail?

Post by kanode »

Does anyone have any info on the Red Tanks "Cutoff" versus the Red Tanks trail to get over the Red Tanks divide?

The "cutoff" around the SW side of the divide seems to be the only trail currently in use. Has anyone taken the official trail around the NE side of the divide?

The difference in the two routes is best seen on the Superstition Search and Rescue map at:
http://www.superstition-sar.org/downloa ... needle.pdf

The Beartooth Pub. "plastic" map doesn't show the cutoff. Neither does the Tonto FS map.

National Geographic and my GPS show only the cutoff.

I looked around briefly at both ends of the Cutoff and didn't see any evidence of the official trail. Using the Cutoff, the Red Tanks trail were distinct and well cairned.
