Grand Canyon Full Moon Hike Sat. July 16th

Post by IHike »

Meet up at Grand Canyon Back Country office at 4pm. Grab a quick dinner at Maswick then shuttle over to South Kaibab TH. Hike down to boat beach, hang out for a bit, soak up the moonlight, then head up Bright Angel trail, greeting sunrise near the top.

Sounds like fun, but why not just during the day? To avoid the heat?

Just so you know, the Moon is full on the 15th, so the moon will rise at 20:35 on the 16th, while the sun will set at 19:43 that day. Civil twilight is at 20:08, so there will be some darkness.

Some friends of mine and I did this hike last year and while it is a test of sleep depravation its also a way to see the canyon in a different light. Just the fact that it is a canyon, there are several places on the trail that do get dark but you wouldn't believe what you can see once you let your eyes adjust. Also its is fun and you do avoid the direct heat of the sun ... Thanks for the moon rise and sun set times. :D

-Sounds like fun...I've done the BA to river and back, at night, years ago when I was working graves....

Watch out for rattlers...we scared up a pink about 1/2 mile from river.

My guess would be that this hike would have a much better chance of wildlife sightings, especially around the sunrises and sets.

Is that possible to car pool to the Grand Canyon for this full moon hike?

Just be very quiet around Indian Gardens... We did a full moon hike out to Plateau point and back and had a Park Ranger give us a hard time about being down there thinking we were going to camp but just saying we were hiking at night since overnight needs a back country permit...

Sounds like a blast! I would do it but already have a night hike in the works for the same day. Kyle (tough_boots) and I are going to do the Superstition Ridgeline that night. Please post some photos if possible.

Great advice from all.. I do hope to see some wildlife other than a rattlesnake.

I am leaving tomorrow afternoon and staying in Flag with family Friday night otherwise I would gladly carpool. I do have a friend driving up on Saturday, If you want, shoot me a message with your phone number and I will see what I can find out.

Your hike sounds awesome... I might have to consider this for August. I will see what I can do about photos.

Glow sticks are cool to keep track of people on the trail and make neat pictures too with a little bit of a timed exposure...
