Well, since so many have asked...

Post by PaleoRob »

Ever since The Marauders came out a few years ago people have been asking me if I am going to write another book. The answer has always been a sorta-maybe type deal. I'm here to say today that the answer is a definite yes. I have begun work on a book about dams that were never built in the Colorado River basin. I have some people in the Bureau of Reclamation interested in the project and am hoping to get some support from them, as well as Park Service. Obviously this will be different from my previous book in that it will be non-fiction. Anyway, just thought I'd let y'all know.

@Alston Neal Have you read "Cadillac Desert"? If not, that's a good place to start while waiting for Rob's book.

Ditto on the good luck wishes... I'm optimistic the creative flood-gates will open wide and ideas will flow in an unending stream...

and before the groans start, you know someone was thinking about it (Alston...)... With so many bad analogies available, it was just a matter of time...

I was trying to keep this topic on a more cerebral plane and it's very difficult for me.
Ah yes Cadillac Desert, I remember that, great series on PBS, correct?

There was a study that came out in 1947 that listed about 250 dam sites in the Colorado River basin. Most of those were never seriously considered. About 50 were built. I'm concentrating on a half-dozen or so that came very close to being built and were canceled for a variety of reasons.

Rob, my boatman pal showed me several of these places along the river the past couple of weeks. One of them is way downriver, at a place called Bridge City. I think it's around river mile 230. Lots of relics left over from the camp there. We didn't stop there, though.

Yeah, that Bridge Canyon dam was the closest of the GC dams to actually being built.

:o Sheez. That would have back up into the "main" parts of the Park. Glad some people didn't think it was such a great idea.

Rob, we'll be camping at Bridge City this upcoming river trip. It should be extremely interesting. Any recommended reading you might have specific to Bridge City? I think I do still own Cadillac Desert, could re-read that.
