Central Arizona Project
CAP is Arizona's single largest resource for renewable water supplies and delivers about 1.5 million acre-feet of Colorado River water per year to Pima, Pinal and Maricopa counties. The 336-mile long system of aqueducts, tunnels, pumping plants and pipelines carries water from Lake Havasu near Parker to the southern boundary of the San Xavier Indian Reservation southwest of Tucson. CAP supplies water to cities and water utilities, agricultural users and Native American communities.

Fun Facts:

The City of Phoenix receives Colorado River water via the CAP.
The average depth of the canal is 16.5 feet.
Water moves through the canal at 2.4 miles per hour and is lifted nearly 3,000 feet in elevation during its journey.
One acre-foot is 325,851 gallons, or enough water to cover one acre,
about the size of a football field, with one foot of water.
One acre-foot of water will supply two average Arizona families for a year.
Lake Pleasant, located about 10 miles from Deem Hills, is CAP's largest reservoir, with capacity to store more than 800,000 acre-feet.
Grass-eating carp are used to control algae in the canal instead of chemicals.
