Shortleaf in the background, and a lone pitch pine with heavy epicormic branching likely in response to the hot fire in 2017. Pitch and pond pine (which does not get as far north as here) in the Atlantic Coastal Plain are known for their ability to withstand high intensity fires by re-sprouting with epicormic shoots post fire, as well as having serotinous cones. All 3 species can sprout from their bases when seedlings are top killed. Arizona pine seedlings are also able to sprout from their base if top killed by fire. I am not aware of any western pine that exhibits epicormic shoots. Lodgepole exhibits serotiny.
