The Formation of Dunes
The wind is constantly bringing more sand. Over time the wind piles the sand into dunes.
Dunes can start forming around obstacles. An obstacle defects the wind causing it to drop sand around the obstacle. Look closely at the first, southern-most dune. Notice, near the top of the dune is a rock ledge. This obstacle resulted in the formation of the first dune at Coral Pink. Once a dune starts forming it further deflects the wind which affects each succeeding sand dune.
