I'm not sure what the story is on the lack of tops and leaves on these trees but you would think it is probably fire related. One of the items from the brochure that comes with this hike says an average of one out of every 10 large ponderosas along the rim shows evidence of lightning strikes. The undergrowth was very pretty.
