Per the trail guide, "13. These boulders are remnants of the cone volcano to the north. Less than 50 million years ago [so, like recently], Boulder Mountain erupted and covered much of the Escalante region with lava flows and boulders." 18 miles north, Boulder Mountain is really more of a plateau. At least it is now. After the explosion.
