I'm always curious about these "mortar-type" holes in basalt boulders. They're usually not perfectly round and smooth to the bottom (like many mortars) but I find them at overlooks on prominent boulders and not on "random boulders"...so I think they are man made, possibly enlarging natural holes. Similar one on an adjacent boulder.
