Interestingly, I saw this same flower a couple different times for the rest of our hikes. I'm pretty sure it's a Penstemon and apparently they don't like crowds as they are very singular. I did try to ID via the AmericanSouthwest site but came up blank. Ah ha, I found it using this search tool: http://wildflowersearch.org/search?olds ... 3983.y=114. No wonder I've never seen it before, it's called Kiabab Plateau Beardtongue or Penstemon pseudoputus.
