A mule powered winch, located on the east end of Horseshoe Mesa near the Miner's Spring Trail. This trail leads down the east side of Horseshoe, past several mine openings, past the spur trail to the spring to Hance Creek. There was a plank bolted on to the channel over the larger gear's shaft, and steel cable was wound on the drum. Mules were harnesed to the plank and walked in a circle to drive the drum. It was used to haul ore up a near-by cliff face from the mine shaft below. The band on the left was the brake. It is operated by applying pressure with the steel handle seen behind the winch. There is still a section of 150 year old leather, intact, under the band.
