Along the ridge extending out to Schultz Peak, lots of mutliple fire scars on the old bristlecone pines. This is consistent with the south slope east of the saddle between Agassiz and Peak 11673. The obvious char indicate the damage was fire related, and not animal. Spruce and fir have seeded in over the last century, and this was destroyed by the 2022 Pipeline Fire, but the warm upper slopes of the Peaks had bristlecone forests 150 years ago that resembled ponderosa in many aspects. Note the thick duff buildup in the stand. When this burned in 2022, it did so very hot and upslope, with a strong head-wind, and therefore was an intense crown fire. It is very, very, very unlikely that this was the natural or pre-1900 fire regime for these slopes of Bristlecone Pine on the San Francisco Peaks.
