I stepped into a burrow dug by beaver a few feet from this spot and unexpectedly found myself in a thigh deep hole in the ground. When I was a kid in the 80s, the canyon had a ton more beaver in it, and as a consequence, a lot less dense vegetation on the shores. It was easier to get around (and a much more popular hike). Four years ago, I was down in here and saw zero signs of beaver. They seem to be making a little bit of a comeback. I'm not sure if it's trapping or something else affecting the numbers, as it's certainly prime beaver habitat and not much except maybe a bear or lion would mess with a grown one -- they're bigger and meaner than people expect LOL.
