The Winter Garden takes the concept of a conservatory to new heights, literally and figuratively.
the sculpture “Boy Stealing Geese”—the centerpiece of the Winter Garden. Karl Bitter, a Viennese artist who immigrated to America in 1889, created the beautiful marble and bronze fountain sculpture located in the glass-roofed garden room.
The Winter Garden is the room where tropical plants would have been located, surviving even during the harsh winter months. Underneath this vast, marble floor was the potted plant room located in the subbasement.
Sunken from the main floor, open, with a roof made of architecturally sculptured wood and glass. A stylish interior garden, popular during the Victorian Age, exceptional by any comparison, a marvel in itself. The garden room is round, lined with stone archways; a grand hallway leads the full circle of the room allowing visibility to the garden from any direction.
