Rooftop tour over and now I made a mad dash back down to the Walled Garden. This time I strolled through at a more leisurely pace. How fabulous would it be to see it in the spring with those 75,000 tulips. I don't think my heart could take it, ha!

Walled Garden: The centerpiece of the gardens features a seasonal rotation of blooms, including 75,000 tulips in the spring, colorful summer annuals, and fall mums. A long arbor covered with grapevines runs down the center with themed areas, including a butterfly garden, white border, scented border, and Victorian border. four-acre garden designed by famed father of American landscape architecture, Frederick Law Olmsted. Olmsted envisioned the Walled Garden as a functional kitchen garden of fruits and vegetables. “Vanderbilt kind of nixed that idea,” admits Murray. Biltmore’s owner, George Vanderbilt, wanted a pretty showpiece instead. “A garden of ornament rather than utility,” said Vanderbilt. Not surprisingly, the man cutting the paycheck won.
