The Lagoon. I really couldn't find much information about it. However, it was mostly used for recreation. The French Broad River is right next to it. Water was an important aspect of Victorian landscaping, and Olmsted incorporated two elements for the estate: the Bass Pond created from an old creek-fed millpond and the Lagoon. Each was used for guest recreation such as fishing and rowing.
