Hiking up the Ophir Canyon Road from the Ophir mill site towards the top of the distance ridge at the end of the canyon. I would run out of time and energy about 3/4 mile and 720 ft elev from my goal. I had been warned by an old backpacker working the bar at the Tonopah Brewery that the road was impassable except for an extremely modified 4x4. He was wrong although there was a steep rocky section where I would have been concerned about my vehicle starting to slide backwards ending up buried in the thicket of aspen in the gully below.
