-8 now (feels like -18). Temps are usually in mid 30s for high, mid-teens for lows this time of year. For the record while I was there it got to -52 on Jan 24, 1969. Back in the day we would have weeks when it wouldn't get above zero. And believe it or not it got to 111 in Aug 5, 1961 which was around the time we moved there from the farm. Those low temps had to be shocking to my mom who moved to Montana in 1953 from San Jose CA.
I do have my watching the temperature drop story from 1977. The details are becoming fainter but this is kind of what I remember (based on temp records it may have been Dec 8th): I was living at the farm north of Havre (about 16 miles from the Canadian border) and we (my brother Wayne and me) decided to go play cards with our dad's foreman up at the Hacienda which was 3 miles from the Canadian border. On the drive up there our power steering was starting to freeze up a little. I think the temp was probably 15 below or so.
We started playing cards and we could actually feel it getting colder so I decided to check the outdoor thermometer that I could see from the door. Well let me just say, when it showed -48, I didn't look again. The next morning I needed to get to Havre for student teaching but nothing would start. They even had warmers on a tractor but we had to wait for a few hours before we were able to even get back to the farm.
