| no partners | | I'm not much of a hiker, but something compelled me to the top on this one - I think it must have been the snow
I usually just run the trails around Lost Dutchman park (Jacob's crosscut, prospectors view, siphon draw etc..), but I knew there would be few, if any, opportunities in the future to hike through the snow in the Superstitions, so I went to the top.
Perhaps not properly equipped for a trek through the snow (I was wearing only warmups and a T-shirt, with running shoes rather than boots), I was not deterred. The sun was shinning, and the wind was light so I never really got cold, although my hands and feet were slightly numb from the snow.
Near the top of the basin, I was fortunate to meet Alex, visiting from Michigan (but he had hiked the flatiron a number of times before). Luckily, he was going to the top, and showed me the way. Only one pair of hikers reached the summit before we did, and I was glad to have their footprints to follow since I had never been up to the flatiron before, and the snow was very deep near the top.
Needless to say, the view was spectacular, and the climb well worth it. |
