| no partners | | While descending from the peak via the route described, my cell battery died. I continued to follow the ridge but began sliding too far to the east and became somewhat lost. I decided I should turn around and climb back up the mountain. I passed a coiled rattlesnake and then stumbled upon the personal effects of a hiker who became lost in February, 2019 and never found. At the site were two hiking poles, a waist pack and one hiking shoe. I stuffed the pack into my back pack and continued the climb. I made it to Hopkins Road and a guy who worked at the observatory and who also had been part of the original search effort, loaned me a battery charger. Examining the contents of the pack, he confirmed it belonged to the lost hiker as there was a car key and a note having the man's name, "Smallwood" from Ohio. I found the site about half a mile from the road. Later I was interviewed by sheriff deputies and asked if I would lead a group back to the site, which I am happy to do, perhaps this week. I did not linger long at the site as I had my own issue to solve but did not notice any human remains. |
