This was our first time at Patagonia Lake, on a very pleasant day. We kayaked around on the lake for a bit then took the Sonoita Creek loop trail. The state park maps say this is a 1/2 mile trail, but from the beach parking lot and around the Lower Loop and back was 2.7 miles. Lots of wildflowers and birds. This is a very easy trail, albeit a little overgrown right now, but still simple and easy to follow.

Hiked the nature preserve with Belle. From Visitors Center took Railroad Trail to Javelina to Creek Trail, then Railroad to Blue Heaven Road and over to Geoffrey Platts Loop Trail. Did that lasso loop, then came back via Railroad Trail to Cienega Loop to Pradera Trail to the Visitors Center.

Nice little nature walk around the preserve. Most trees have dropped all their leaves and the wind was blowing pretty steadily. Super muddy near the spring. Beautiful near the creek and tons of blue jays and woodpeckers. Nice stroll near the creek for a Sunday.

Don't you love it when a series of impulsive decisions lead you to be in exactly the right place at exactly the right time?! That was my day today. :D
As of yesterday I wasn't even sure I'd be going out today - part of me wanted to sit at home and watch the Kavanaugh hearings. By bedtime last night, though, I had pretty much decided I would take a nice short half day trip to bird the St. David Monastery and Lake Cochise. But - prone to change my mind as I am - this morning I kept thinking about the American Redstart that has been hanging out at Paton's in Patagonia ... AMRE is very rare in Arizona, last seen at Paton's in 1994 ... I also had a facebook post on my mind - a photo of two young Mountain Lions posted by a volunteer at the Patagonia Sonoita Creek Preserve. So at 6:30 I hit the road towards Patagonia.
Spent an hour at Paton's - saw about 20 different species of birds and had good conversation with the volunteers. No American Redstart in evidence.
Drove down Blue Haven Road to the Preserve Visitor Center - paid my $6, saw the Mountain Lion warning signs, chatted with the volunteer, and bought a poster. Then drove halfway back up the road to the primitive trailhead there, with no real plan.
After consulting my little map, decided to make a loop of the Railroad Trail and the Creek Trail.
Saw deer and squirrels along the Railroad, then had a close encounter with a Javelina along the creek. I was standing still and he was making his was up the stream ... he didn't know I was there until he stopped about 6 feet away and started sniffing the air in my direction. After a couple photos, I said - softly - "Hi piggy", and he turned tail and shot off.
Next up were more deer in the field and some birds.
Then when I reached the junction where I intended to loop back to my car, I looked at the map again and saw the Spring Trail and the Cienega Loop very close by in the other direction - thought that sounded nice and decided to add it. Good decision.
Soon saw a mama and baby deer - very cute!
About halfway around this spontaneous loop, I crouched down to take a photo of a sign, then as I stood back up I looked at the tree to my right and found myself making eye contact with a Mountain Lion! The tree was 10 feet away, and she was 15 feet up on a horizontal limb ... for a total of just 25 feet between us!
When I remembered to breathe - and function - I said "Hi kitty", took three photos, and began slowly backing up. I knew there were two young ones from the previous photo I had seen, and obviously a mama cat around somewhere ...
Once I backed out of sight, my adrenaline really kicked in and my heart pounded! I also did a little celebration dance. :y:
A minute later, a squirrel startled me and I just about jumped out of my skin!
The mammal show wasn't quite done yet - I had one more close encounter, this time with a coati - on the hike back.
Drove back to the V.C. because I couldn't wait to tell someone. Then another quick stop at Paton's to show them my pics and try for the AMRE one more time - still didn't see it, but can't say I cared too much by this point.
Stopped at Lake Cochise on the way home to see all the water and shore birds, and managed to get a couple lifers.
Awesome, amazing day!!

Woke up in Green Valley - or maybe Sahuarita, who knows? - this morning and decided to bag the contemplated Bog/Kent Springs Loop hike in favor of Patagonia birding.
Took a fun, scenic route from the I19 to Ruby Road and S. River Road, to the 82 into Patagonia. Passed by the turnoff to Patagonia Lake State Park - thought I might return to bird there after first hitting Paton's.
All I can say about Tucson Audubon's Paton Center For Hummingbirds is WOW! My long anticipated first visit did not disappoint! Trust me, even if you are not "into" birds, this place is worth a stop if you're in Patagonia.
There must have been at least a hundred hummingbirds of 5 or 6 different species, as well as many, many other birds, butterflies, caterpillars, lizards, squirrels, and deer.
My target life birds for this visit - the reason I choose Patagonia for the day - were the Violet-crowned Hummingbird and the Yellow-billed Cuckoo. No Cuckoos were in evidence, but the unique beauty of the Violet-crowned more than made up for it! :y:
The very colorful Broad-billed Hummers were fun to watch, but each time the Violet came into view he made me catch my breath - that may be my favorite new bird of the year!
Hiked the Nature Conservancy Trail for a while from Paton's, then drove the rest of the way to the Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve and hiked around there a bit. Saw my first Cassin's Kingbird there.
The Patagonia area is incredibly lush and green right now. I could totally live there.
Driving between Sonoita and Elgin on the way home, I got a good look at a gorgeous herd of 10 or 12 Pronghorns off the road - unfortunately there was no place to pull over so I still don't have any good photos of Pronghorns.

hmmmmm, Phoenix Magazine suggested hiking the "Upland Trail" followed by a trip to the Canelo Hills Winery.

I couldn't find much on the Upland Trail, but assumed the Visitor Center would be able to direct me.....but, the Visitor Center ended up being closed.

Atleast, the Winery existed and was worth the drive down! :y:

Hiked this the afternoon of September 17, 2009. Very easy stroll, though it was quite warm and, despite the pictures, not much water. Out of season for birds. Probably would have been more interesting had we come across more wildlife.

Our Time in Eden

We took our son Max to Patagonia-Sonoita Creek Preserve for his first ever hike. What a perfect place for it. We saw a Great Horned Owl in a giant Cottonwood tree, and a birder let us view a Gray Hawk with his powerful birding scope. We also saw several deer (I've seen deer here in 3 out of 3 visits!) and countless other birds. This time we added the short Cienga trail to the end of the loop. The trail proved to be a refreshing conclusion for it smelled strongly of mint. Once again, the preserve blew me away, and I was pleased to share it with my wife, father, mother, and son. It's my birthday tomorrow, but we already celebrated it and SO MUCH MORE at the preserve.

These are days you'll remember.
Never before and never since, I promise, will the whole world be warm as this.
And as you feel it, you'll know it's true that you are blessed and lucky.
It's true that you are touched by something that will grow and bloom in you.

These are days you'll remember.
When May is rushing over you with desire to be part of the miracles you see in every hour.
You'll know it's true that you are blessed and lucky.
It's true that you are touched by something that will grow and bloom in you.

These are days.

These are the days you might fill with laughter until you break.
These days you might feel a shaft of light make its way across your face.
And when you do you'll know how it was meant to be.
See the signs and know their meaning.
It's true, you'll know how it was meant to be.
Hear the signs and know they're speaking to you, to you.

--These Are Days, 10000 Maniacs (Album: Our Time in Eden).
