My sister, her two children and my mom headed to Mighigan’s Upper Peninsula for a couple days of camping, exploring and revisiting old childhood favorites. Tahquamenon was always a favorite of ours during our annual summer trips to the U.P., so we were sure to include it in our three day itinerary.

The falls are very developed and cater to people of all ability levels, in terms of access. The trail is a combination of nice paved walkway and well built boardwalk with some viewpoInts built in. The falls were as impressive as I had remembered them and I still found myself as mesmerized and impressed by the 50 foot tall waterfalls as I was over 20 years ago.

After the falls, we linked up with the Giant Pines Loop. The pleasant loop and trail takes you through some relatively impressive stands of white pine and through a thick mixed forest of hardwoods and conifers. We would have appreciated the pleasant trail more had the mosquitos and flies not been so bad. Even with wearing 98 percent Deet we did not get much relief. My sister’s poor little kids seemed to have been targeted the worst. If you stopped for even the shortest break, you found yourself covered in mosquitoes. Consequently, we hiked the trail at a pretty brisk pace and I ended up having my mom and sister wait at a parking lot about a mile from the trailhead to get some relief from the bugs while I finished the last leg to get the car.

This trail would be a great option in the fall or early spring, but I think the mosquitoes and flies would be a little much for most people during the summer months, but I still enjoyed the hike and it was nice to roam around the woods that probably piqued my initial interest in the outdoors.

When I was waiting for the sun to rise at the Mackinaw City Beach, I was talking to a local. He gave me recommendations of things to do in the area. One of the things he recommended was coming to check out the Tahquamenon falls. Since it was in the direction of Mt Arvon, I decided to give it a shot.
I started the hike at the upper falls, then hiked the River Trail to the lower falls. If I had researched the area, I would have then made a loop trail to Clark Lake, then back to the upper falls. Since I didn't research the area, I back tracked up the river trail back to my truck. This park was very busy. It was hard to find a parking spot. Im guessing the fall colors where bringing in a lot of people.
