08/10/2018 -- Longmire Trailhead (WT)

This is #1 trail in PNW! I recommend at least 7 days as the trail is hard, lots of steep uphill and downhill, snow and washed out bridges, beautiful scenery!
We did stick to our plan and liked the itinerary. Also, we liked going clockwise. We didn't cash any food, carried everything in a bear canister and bear sack.

Day 1 - we started after picking up permits at Longmire around noon. It was rainy at Paradise but once we got on the trail the weather improved. It was mostly cloudy but around 65-70 degrees. The trail was mostly through the forest. At the end of the day, we got up to the ridgeline just before descending to South Puyallup River camp. The clouds moved and we got a our first glimpse of Mt. Rainier! And we saw couple mountain goats peeking behind rocks at the top of the pass. We got to the camp around 8:30pm, set up tent, got one glass of wine in and went to bed, tired after 16 miles on the trail.

Day 2- we hiked from South Puyallup River all the way to Golden Lakes camp. Trail goes uphill right after crossing a bridge and doesn't stop for a while. You will reach a ridgeline and get more great views of Mt. Rainier. We took about 2 hour lunch break at St. Andrews lake in St. Andrews park. Best spot on the trail that day. Arrived to Golden lakes around 6pm and enjoyed some wine and hot turkey dinner by the lake. We hiked about 15 miles that day.

Day 3 - shortest and easiest day on Wonderland. Hiked 11 miles from Golden Lakes to Mowich Lake. Got there about 3pm and enjoyed time at the lake and campground. There is access to the road so lots of people and walk in campground.

Day 4 - Our day started at 6am with 7 mile day hike to Tolmie Peak Lookout. After coming back from our hike and some food, we started our hike to Carbon River. We decided to take the hardest route, via Spray Park and Seattle Park trail. Our hike was about 13 miles (so 20 mile day total). The trail is mostly going up via Spray falls and beautiful Spray Park towards Seattle Park and then down to Carbon River. This trail is my favorite part of the hike!

Day 5 - This was another 20 mile day. From Carbon River our hike started steep up by Carbon Glacier to Mystic Lake. Great views everywhere. We had some break and lunch at Mystic Lake and then continued towards feared Winthrop river crossing. Luckily, the bridge was in place. Then the worst and steepest climb started. Over 3,000 feet to the Skyscraper Pass. The hike is grueling but the views from the top! Amazing views of Mt. Rainier and surroundings. From the pass the hike goes down (and up again) towards Sunrise! This section is really pretty. We arrived to Sunrise around 6pm and were able to get in some burgers and about 5 liters of soda :D We stayed overnight at the Sunrise camp.

Day 6 - We hiked from Sunrise to Summerland! One of the prettiest sections of Wonderland. We spent about 2 hours at Summerland meadows, taking pictures and enjoying some down time. After that we made our way up the Panhandle Gap and decided to spend night at the top. We saw bunch of mountain goats and had enjoyed some nice sunset. Total 16 miles.

Day 7 - Woke up early and started our hike south. From Panhandle Gap down to Indian Bar and then up and down all the way to Nickel Creek. From Nickel Creek we ventured to the Box Canyon. Total 14 miles.

Day 8 - Nickel Creek to Mapel Creek and Paradise and Longmire!!

I did this out and back on part of the Wonderland Trail leaving from my campsite in the Cougar Campground. The actual trailhead for the Carter Falls is just across the road from the campground. This part of the Wonderland Trail follows the Paradise River and is very pretty. I went up past the two falls and a ways beyond the Paradise group campground. The hike came in at 5.0 miles with 900 feet of AEG in 2 hours.

Unbelievable trip! We took a family vacation to visit some friends in Seattle, but my friend and I got to take a whole day to go get some hiking in on Mount Rainier. We drove down to the Sunrise visitor center, and headed westward through Berkeley Park. After reaching the saddle, we took the slope down to the Winthrop Glacier and the creek that is exploding out of it. Came back the way we went, but I took some time to scramble up Skyscraper Peak on the way back before the fog rolled over us. Great weather, highs about 70 degrees or so, lots of cloud cover. we had to traverse some pretty large snowfields, a little out of the norm for a desert rat like myself. There is a very good reason that this area is designated as a National Park. I hope to get back soon!
