Deep backcountry, waterfalls, beautiful beach... everything you asked for and without the crowds!
We started at the Waipi'o Valley lookout and hiked about 1 mile to the valley floor (1,000' descent). We hiked across the valley along a black sand beach, fording the Wailoa Stream, strolling through stands of ironwood and naupaka kahakai. When we reached the opposite side of the valley, we began the Muliwai Trail by making a challenging ascent of 1,200' in less than a mile on switch-backs cut into the wall of Waipi'o Valley. The trail then passes through 13 smaller gulches that are only up to 500' deep before dropping 1,200' into Waimanu Valley on a switchback cut that is minimally maintained, steep, deeply eroded in places, rocky, muddy and slippery when wet. After crossing another river we reached the beach and set up camp. Stayed for 2 nights, enjoyed the ocean and beach and hiked to the Wai'ilikaha Falls. The 3rd day morning we packed up and hiked out same way we got in.
The steep hike (1,200') out of Waipi'o Valley (twice) and out of Waimanu Valley with a backpack is difficult.
There are wild pigs, centipedes, mosquitoes (no snakes or alligators) and the entire area is open to mammal hunting year around. Day/night temps in the 70's to high 80's and humid. |
