Followed Whetstone Ridge out to the Twin Lakes trail junction. From there I headed south and skirted around the east side of Battle Ax Mountain. After reaching the 4x4 rd above Elk Lake I headed west over Beachie Saddle and followed Battle Ax Creek drainage north. Creek crossing at the bottom was just about knee deep and a little brisk. Made the climb back up to Whetstone Ridge and up to Whetstone Peak before heading back to the trailhead.
Clouds developed as the day progressed and I didn't hike quite as fast as I had planned, so I arrived at Whetstone Mountain by headlamp to a disappointing view. Still a fun day though. Encountered 4-5 other groups of backpackers on trail, no day hikers. |
