Staying in Durango this week and decided to tackle Animas City Mountain. 416 fire was raging 10 miles north of Durango and had me smoked out. It was a pleasant hike and the views would have been awesome without the smoke.

Liz and I were in town for a long weekend and wanted to get some hike-y exercise. We had a few few hours before afternoon commitments so this hike is a great option. Nice view points along the way and incredible scenery in all directions from the top- the town, the meandering Animas and San Juans mountains in the distance. Lovely hike :)

Tug and I headed out to try to beat the looming thunderstorms and hit the Animas Mountain loop. We had to jog some parts of it to try to beat the rain. We didn't win!

Our original plan was to snowshoe in the Durango area. We arrived to unseasonably warm weather and very little snow. We decided on the Animus City Mountain Trail and it was the perfect choice!

We started hiking a few minutes after 12pm and made steady progress up the trail. It starts off fairly steep and continues gaining elevation as you ascend. We opted for a counter clockwise loop. This worked out perfectly because we hiked along the eastern perimeter of the mountain and this offered excellent views of Durango and the surrounding area. We took a break around the 2.5 mile mark and then started heading west. We eventually hit a cairn at the high point. The views north were breathtaking! All the snowcapped peaks called to us!

At roughly the 3.25 mile mark the trail makes a hard left and heads due south through the forest all the way back to the trailhead. We flew down this section and arrived back to the jeep in mid-afternoon. This was the perfect hike to start our afternoon. The views were fantastic and the hike was very enjoyable. We went over to the Animas Brewery afterward to enjoy a cold one. I like Colorado! :D

We arrived in Durango late morning and stopped for a late bfast/ lunch at a cute bagel place before heading over to Animas City Mountain. This is another Urban hike of sorts, though the area is pretty vast and there were few people on the trails so we could forget that we were in town pretty much. I love Colorado and this trail is another beautiful hike through tall pine trees with gorgeous views of Durango and the Animas River. Near the top it was cold and there were a few patches of snow. Views of the mountains and Purgatory were also a nice reward, though I enjoyed the entire hike. On the way down we ran into a girl who was having difficulty finding her way down through the forested trails so she kept close to us for a bit.
This is a great hike- very scenic and also incredibly accessible. I could spend way more time here. This hike is memorable enough, though there is so much more worth checking out in this area!

We were in Durango for the Ska Brewery Beer Fest (good times!), and Mark's friend Denis who lives there, and his dog Romulus, took us on a hike near his house. The views of Durango from this loop hike were phenomenal! We got to watch 2 glider planes go by us too! What a pretty place!
