My boys (five and eight) and I came to Denver with my wife so she could take a class. After a couple of days exploring downtown Denver (which was very cool by the way) the boys and I headed out to Boulder to get a taste of the mountains. The Anne U White Trail looked like a good choice for kids due to proximity to the city, distance, and minimal elevation gain. To get to the trailhead, take Broadway road North to Lee Hill Drive, turn left and drive about a mile until you reach Wagon Wheel Road. Turn left on Wagon Wheel Road and drive another mile until you reach Pinto Dr. Turn left on Pinto Dr. and drive a few hundred feet to the trailhead at the end of the road. This time of year (Jul-Aug) the trail is only open from sunrise to noon because of flash floods in the creek. Although I did not know this prior to our arrival, we arrived at 10AM, so we had a couple hours to explore. The parking at the trailhead consisted of a whopping 4 spots, and two more spots reserved for emergency vehicles. Additional parking is had along Wagon Wheel Road at the intersection with Pinto Dr.

This trail follows scenic Four Mile Canyon Creek back into the mountains. At the trailhead the creek was dry, but as we hiked further back, water started to surface and the trees began to thicken. There are several areas where you can walk up to the creek and explore more closely. On this day there was very little water in the creek, just a trickle. My boys and I found a nice spot and had fun damming up the water, and then seeing if breaking one dam would cause a big enough "flood" to break the other dam. Beautiful clouds passed by overhead, darkening the sky now and then.
