thursday we had an 1100 entry ticket
good chance of rain, so i wasn't sure how much hiking we would get in
drove to the fern lake trailhead and headed for the pool
the hike is along the big thompson river
a lot of burned areas along the trail, apparently a fire last year
some interesting reading about it online (fern lake fire)
i didn't really mind that, since i've hike through plenty of burned terrain in arizona
nice to hike along running water
we saw arch rocks and arrived at the pool, where fern creek meets the big thompson river
decided to hike another mile or so to cub lake
the highlight of the hike was seeing two moose at cub lake 8)
didn't do the loop since we didn't want the road walk so retraced our steps
in 2006 i hiked up to fern lake - believe the trail goes on to odessa lake

On my way back I ran into a marmot on one of the snowy traverses. I was on the snowbank, he was headed in the opposite direction. He looked for a way around me but it was the only path, so he had to wait for me to finish the traverse before he could keep going where he was headed. :D
