Not as narrow as some sandstone slots in Arizona and Utah, but quite deep (up to 200 ft cliffs surround) and the narrowest section extends for almost 1 mile at ~15-20 ft wide. The air between the walls was quite a bit cooler than the open air temperature and I imagine this would be a nice place to be as the summer heat kicks up. There are some nice petroglyphs in the canyon, both panels and individual symbols. Some have been vandalized, but others are in excellent condition.
Although the driving directions in my hiking book were outdated (and there are 3 roads in Moapa named Warm Springs Road ), we eventually managed to find the BLM access road. Unfortunately, this meant we reached the trailhead about 1:30pm, which made for hurried hiking. It gave us a good taste, though, and we are already planning a trip back.
Saw only 2 other people, climbers. Not much animal activity except for two hawks. |
